My First Fuente Fuente OpusX

Emjaysmash

The Hebrew Hammer
I smoked my first OpusX tonight, so I thought I'd post about it.

It had been sitting for a couple of months in my humi, and upon removing the cedar i found plume! So we're off to a good start.

The smoke was great, but the finish had ammonia. which is why this cigar only got an 8 instead of a 9 on my scale. Im positive if I had let it sit longer, it would have been fantastic.

I'm hoping to find some more somewhere and age them, but I thought I'd share my "coming of age" experience with all you gorillas.

Happy Smoking!

Did you find "plume" under the cedar only?

If so, it was most likely mold. Anejos and Opus with cedar are notorious for molding for some reason. Oh well anyway, at least you enjoyed it.

Yeah, that was my first thought too. I did inspect it however, and it all wiped of very easily with one brush of a finger. If the was mold, it was gone when i smoked it.

I smoked one of these in a place where setting and beverage and scenery had SO much to do with my enjoyment of the cigar. I will say the flavors were there also, but Casa Fuente is a HELL of a place to burn one. Anyhow, I think I bought the perfection #5 something along the lines of a 5 1/5 x 43 for $24.00. Although way to pricey and rare, even for special occasions, this smoke really turned me on to Dominican puros, even though I tend to not smoke too many cigars with DR filler....... odd I guess, but damn near all the DR puros I have had since are bad ass. Glad you enjoyed yours.

Ive never even seen a Opusx of any kind. One of my local b&m's got a few in last Christmas but sold out quickly. So and I don't mean to steal this post but are they worth it? or is it just the holy grail of cigars?

I've been checking my local B&Ms for a couple of months now for an Opus. I've never had one either. I've been hoping to find either an Opus or a Cohiba CC to have for the day my son is born. Thought maybe I would try for an Opus on Cbid but they always go for around $25 or so. Is that high for an Opus or average? Anyway, on a side note if anybody here has an extra of what I seek, hit me with a PM I'd glady purchase one. My son is due around Dec 4th, and I'd like to have one resting by September :ss

Depends. Actual MSRP on Opux X products isn't terrible. But, the issue being that finding them is heck, and lots of places know it... so they charge more.

The last time I managed to lay my hand on some Opus X cigars (from an authorized dealer... which you can look up at their site... I paid about 8 or 9 bucks each. That was about 7 years ago though. But, secondary market... yeah... you'll pay for it.

However, Opus X cigars get shipped a few times a year. My local B&M says they expect a small shipment in September, and a larger one in December.

I have never been a fan of the Opus. That is until I smoked one this weekend that had at least 3 years of age on it. This one I smoked ranked as one of the best smokes I have ever had so given more time you probably would have enjoyed this stick more. I definitely see more of these occupying space in my humi. I will probably store them in the back for a very long nap.

That is way high.

PM sent.

You will never ever find a deal on C-Bid on rare items like the Opus, Anejos, GOFs etc.People usually take these way beyond retail.:gn

I am glad you enjoyed your first Opus. I thik these are much better after they sit for a few years. The amonia and harshness disapears, and they become a great smoke that is worth the money (MSRP). I don't think they are worth the $25-$35 they get inflated to by most retailers.

I thought it sounded a little high, but just wanted to make sure. It's weird how some deals on usually high MSRP cigars can be had and others go for way over.

They definitely better with a few years on em. I did a taste test once with one that was 1 yr old and one that was like 6 yrs old, one after another. The difference was very noticeable, you could taste the potential in the young one, and the older one delivered on that potential.

Opus are NOT the Holy Grail of cigars! While a great cigar for MSRP if you pay more than say Msrp +15% or so then they are just another overpriced premium. Go into one with the outlook of smoking just another good cigar and you'll not be disapointed... but if you start with the outlook of smoking the $35+ end all be all of cigars you'll absolutely be let down. FWIW Cbid has just insane prices of them ; I guess guys just have so much money to throw at them that it doesn't matter to them?

Love the Opus, one of my favorite cigars of all time. Got a section in the Vino for them, to age for a few more years, before I will enjoy them. Got 4 that have 4 years on them, recently smoked one, it was by far the best cigar I have had to date.
