My First Review: CAO America Torpedo

It's my first cigar review so don't be too hard on me. I'm also curious what other
brother's impressions have been of this one. Here goes...

This is a handsome cigar that, from leaf to band, does everything right when it comes to appearance. As you know it is pinstriped with two full wrappers, and Connecticut shade and broad leaf. The cigar is solidly packed and draws like a dream. I have heard from many that this cigar benefits from a little age so I have hidden it away in the humidor for 3 months prior to smoking.

The pre-light draw was easy and gave hints of sweet earthiness. It lit very readily and started delivering ample smoke with a medium earthy spiciness. The first third settled into a fairly mellow spice with earth and oak flavors.

Moving in to the second third the flavor profile remained quite similar to the first, and I began to barely detect either a coffee bean or chocolate note but as I got into this third, the flavor really began to taste rather flat and it never rose enough for me to tell. The earth and spice also began to become muted with little rising to replace their absence.

At this point I have switched from drinking water to a mai tai a la Trader Vic (recipe follows). I was worried it might overwhelm the relatively lackluster flavor I'm getting in the second third, but if anything its helping to bring a little out of it that I otherwise would not be tasting. I credit the quality of the drink and not the cigar for that.

Moving into the final third of this cigar, the flavor has become even flatter; if that's even possible, and a slight harshness has begun to develop. I am a slow smoker by nature, average at most a puff a minute, so I don't think I'm to blame for that development.

To sum up, this cigar is a lot like the pretty girl with no personality. Great to look at and she may be fun to play with for a little while, but she's not very fun to live with. CAO described this as a robust flavorful smoke, and I feel it fails to deliver either, at best it is medium bodied (but still delivers a good nicotine buzz). For the price I was expecting more in the flavor department. I could maybe see myself smoking this again as a patriotic holiday smoke, but I would certainly rather celebrate with something a little more exciting.

Usually if I'm drinking alcohol with my cigar I either have scotch or bourbon neat or a good Cabernet Sauvignon. But, as this cigar was lacking in the flavor department I made a mai tai instead.

1oz light rum
1oz dark and aged rum
1/2 oz orange curacao
1/2 oz orgeat syrup
1/4 oz simple syrup (i put some vanilla in mine)
juice of one small lime (3/4 oz)

shake all ingredients and pour over crushed ice, garnish with mint sprig (don't skip that its important) 1/8 of lime skin, pineapple, and maraschino cherry (i usually skip on the fruit).

it's a great summer drink that fits as we've been in the 90's most of this week.

You might as well be getting some "flavor" from something, right?:D At the beginning of your review, I thought you were getting ready to smoke a "piece of heaven", but sounds like this cigar just kept your feet grounded. Try another one again maybe in a month and see if it may change your opinion. I haven't smoked this line yet, but have smoked the Brazilia and Cameroon which I've enjoyed. Thanks for the review Quincy...:ss

Good review! I tried one when they first came out and I didn't enjoy the cigar at all. I did buy two, so I let the other sit in the bottom of the humi for about five or six months. Time improves this line, I still don't enjoy it but that doesn't mean you won't.

Nice review. But I also was left flat by this cigar. The only American that I smoked that I liked was the Anthem in the coffin. I found it to be a very flavorful and enjoyable cigar from beginning to end. But they are expensive at $20-22 per stick.

Good review.

I haven't tried any of these but I have a few in deep storage. These smokes appear to have a bad case of "new smoke syndrome".

Here is how that works.

A major marketing effort is placed behind a smoke.
The first smokes produced are held for aging. They are not distributed to reviewers and B & M owners until they are ready. The owner smokes a few himself to make sure they taste just right. Then the pre-release is made. At that point the rave reviews start coming in and the B & Ms start placing their orders.

There is only one problem. Production hasn't ramped up yet and the large volume of smokes is not ready for distribution. As production rushes to keep up with demand the smokes are not aged properly before release. The new smokes the consumer gets are mediocre, and everyone wonders what the reviewers have been smoking. :)

Solution: do the aging yourself. They should have held on to the smokes for one or two years before release if not for their hyperactive marketing department. So you do it for them. I would not count out the America until I have smoked a few with a couple of years in my coolerdor.

btw everything you have read here _cannot_ be true. Just ask any manufacturer or distributor or marketer of cigars or B & M owner or employee--and then start running for your life.

:)

I've had one of these and I remember it being OK with the same flat flavor profile you describe.

I think they develop a decent earthy sweet tone after a while. We have a couple boxes in the shop that are from '06 that are decent smokes.

I think for a twist I prefer Taboo though :) Go Rob!

i've heard they need at least 6 months rest, i have an american anthem in my humi, since my b+m had then at 5$ under msrp, thanks for the review, but i think i'll let mine sit

stearns

My first was similar when they first came out. Dull and tasteless. So I grabbed another and have it sitting in my Humi. When I smoke this one on July 4th it will have been in my humi for 7-8 months. I'll do a post-holiday review, but this one wasn't very encouraging... :hn
