My local cigar bar

So my new local cigar bar has been open now for a couple of months.
The owner has made a new rule "no cigarette smoking"

I thought that was a very bold move.

It's strange, I've only seen a few people smoke cigarettes they rolled at my B&M, thats it. I've never seen anyone whip out a pack of Kools or anything.

They do sell exotic cigarettes, meaning no Marlboro, just Dunhill and Nat Sherman type stuff. So I guess they would have to allow you to smoke what you buy there.

While that is nice, I have found that the cigarette smoke doesn't bother me at my local shop, as the cigar smoke tends to over power it. The previous owner of the cigar shop I call home, didn't ever let cigarettes get smoked inside, but the new owner allows cigarettes, and I can't ever really smell it.

I have no problem with cigarette smoke (probably because I used to smoke them). I find just about any kind of tobacco smoke to smell good.

Sounds like a little bit of pay back for those places that allow cigarette smoking but ban pipes and cigars. I like it.:ss

IMO it puts them at exactly the same level as the places that allow cigarettes and not pipes/cigars. I may be a bit biased because I am a cigarette smoker but I don't think I would frequent a B&M that does not allow you to smoke what you want (as long as it is legal of course). :2

I totally agree with that!:tu

I've been asked to put my cigar down in enough places that I will never ask someone to put their cigarette down.

I think this helps separate cigarettes from cigars and I love it. This is something that we all should be a proponent about considering all the anti-smoking legislation being passed. :2

:tpd: A little pay back for all the times I have heard "yes you can smoke here". Then when I pull out a cigar they say "you can smoke cigarettes but not cigars". Good for the shop owner.:tu

They are both tobaccoo products. Granted one has additives. Why would you want them seperated? If you are against the anti-smoking legislation then you pretty much have to stand up for all smokers rights, not just the ones you like. What if you went to your favorite watering hole and ordered a beer and the bartender said "we don't allow beer drinking here anymore because the liquor drinkers don't like it" so you tell him to give you a bourbon and he says "we don't allow bourbon because the Scotch drinkers don't like it" ?

I like it. I think it's nice for people to have a special place just for cigars and as mentioned above, it helps to open some space from the association with cigarettes in our legal battles..

The B&M I occasionally help out at has the same policy.

1) They are tobacco products but they are very different. The way the tobacco is grown, manufactured, and marketed is very different.
2) Most if not all cigarette smokers smoke to feed an addiction whereas most cigar smokers are hobbyists. Therefore, IMHO, that distinction puts cigarettes and cigars in a different category. One that should be separated accordingly.
3) On health and legislation. IMHO I don't think that second hand smoke is good for anyone. However, as adults we should have the right to smoke. That's why I think that cigar bars, retailers and tobacconists should be except from non-smoking ordinances. The majority of their revenue is generated by the sale of cigars, pipe tobacco, accessories. The business's sole purpose is for tobacco. Restaurants and bars are in business to sell food and alcohol, respectively. If a proprietor wants to open a cigarette bar and a set amount of income is generated by selling cigarettes then that should fall in the same category as the cigar bars. I'd be surprised if cigarette smokers would be able to support a cigarette bar but they should be given the chance.
4) As a cigar smoker and former cigarette smoker I think there is a difference between the habits of the two. Cigar smokers and cigars are being lumped into the same category as cigarette smokers and cigarettes. IMHO they are different and should be governed and viewed as such. :2

Rant over:tu

One of my new customers just opened a cigar bar that does not allow cigarette smoking either. And no, they do not sell them either. I personally like it and every patron that I've seen likes it as well. The main reason that he says is so he doesn't turn into a lunch break cigarette lounge. I also have many other customers that only allow cigar and pipe smoking in their shop, no cigarettes. I think the reason that many shop owners do this is because many places allow cigarette smoking, but do not allow cigar smoking. Just a theory. In the end, it's their shop and their choice.
