My Vinotemp Project

I bought my Vino last week on-sale at Target. The Spanish Cedar I found on my local craigslist. He had roughly 180 board feet and I bought it ALL for $100($0.55 a board foot fot 6" - 12" stock). :tu My garage smell wicked awesome. :dr The beads and Hygrometer I got at www.bargainhumidors.com. Nic, the owner is a great BOTL. I extremely happy with the service I received.

I love to tinker with wood! There's a crap load of cedar left. I am sure more projects are to come.So here are some pics of what I have done so far...

Nice work and nice score on the Spanish cedar.

Hey that looks good. Nice Job.

It looks like you used glue to at the corners... What type of glue did you use? Did you let the drawers sit before adding them to the vino?

Man, what a beautiful job!

I just bought a Vino the other day and want to get some Spanish Cedar drawers/trays made by one of our gorillas who make and sell them. I'd give it a try myself, but I'm not very handy and probably don't have the necessary tools.

I see you left the fan area unblocked which I've read is recommended. One concern I have with some of the products like the "drop in" drawers I've seen or some of the pics where the Vino is solid trays and drawers from top to bottom is that would not a set up like that block the airflow from the fan?

Awesome set-up:tu Sure makes my shelves (I just cut some cedar to the right length and wedged them in the slots) look like a hack job.

I also agree with the concern over not having airflow slots. Might be worth while to cut some grooves in the bottom of the shelves.

I used glue on all the joints. What you are seeing is where i got a bit carried away with the glue. I used Gorilla's new wood glue. It sets up pretty solid in 20 min.

macster

It does look that way. But, I am not sure.

mtb996,

I am not concerned about having slots or holes cut in my shelves. #1 reason is I would be concerned that the edges of the slots/holes would damage the wrapping on the cigar. #2 if you think about it how much airflow is inside a cab. or box? (None)

Josh, looks great -- however I'd recommend you cut a couple small slots in each shelf to help with the airflow. Just my :2.

Darrell, I agree especially on the singles drawers. When he starts filling the vino up with boxes, would it really make a difference with airflow?

Based on the layout of the pictures in the second post I don't see a problem with air flow as long as the shelfs are not protruding too far forward. The fan will blow most of the air forward, hit the front glass and move up and down. The only concern I would have is the change in RH when the unit cycles. Place a RH meter in your vino that shows a high and low for a 24 hour period and see what you get. At my house its a swing of almost 15 to 20 per day. Depending on how often it cycles the vino drops and raises every time it cycles. I placed another identical unit inside a box and recorded the change inside the box for 4 days. Inside the box never moved more than 2 while outside the box changed as much as 17.

BTW - Nice work :tu

Chas,

Great point! I thought about making cedar tops like the glass tops on your shelves. I have a nice remote hyro. coming. I'll post what the changes in humidity are.

I don't know 100% but I would say yes, I'd think at that point you would want either some slots in your shelves or good gaps in front or behind. Again, I'm not 100% on this stuff. :hn
