Nasty Chemical Taste

Maturing Primate
I have a 50 count humidor that I have had for about 3 months. I'm using 70% beads and my humidity usually stays between 68%-70%. My temperature ranges between 69%-72%. For the past 3 weeks or so every cigar (short stories, Sambas, Sancho Panza Double Maduro, and Padron 64 anniversaries) that I've smoked from my humidor has this nasty chemical taste to it. Has anyone ever experienced this? If so what was the problem? I was thinking that it could possibly be the distilled water I have has gone bad or something. Any info would be appreciated as I am tired of tossing cigars midway through. :c

I do not see anything unusual with what you have said. Is there any unusual smell when you open the humi?

What are you using to hold your beads? If it is metalic that might be the problem.

Perhaps it is the humi itself? Did you seal it with any foam or chemicals? Maybe the glue is seeping in?

Try taking your smokes out and putting them in some tupperware. I doubt the distilled water is bad, that stuff is 99.99999999% pure (I think). If it is indeed the box, you may run the chance that the chemicals have gotten into the smokes. I would avoid putting any new stock with the existing stock until you find the source of the problem.

No chemical or unusual smell at all from the cigars. I am using the plastic tube that came with the beads. I was using THE PUCK before switching over to the tubed beads which coincidently is around the time my cigars started getting the chemical taste.

I would agree with doctorcue, it must be the box. That seems unusual unless something was spilled in the humi before you bought it.

I would remove the cigars to another storage space and leave the humi open for a week or so. Maybe let it be outside in the shade part of the time. Then close it up for an hour, open it again and sniff the interior. If there is no odor, then your humi is fine. :2

Could be the box or could be sick palate. Sick palate can make cigarstaste anywhere from flat and airy to metallic or sour. It affects different people in different ways and can be different each time it comes on. Some never get it at all.

Some good advice about changing storage devices in case it is the box. You might also take a break from cigars if you are smoking daily or several times a week. If it is your palate, it should return to normal with a one week to two week break.

You are not crazy. :)

etw I had this same thing come up about 2 months ago, the only change I had made was a new 50ct humidor and round credo....about 5 sticks of this and I switched back to the old humi with the beads in it. after a week in the new humi, I tried one and didnt have the tastes.

Now since that time, I let that humi sit with a round credo filled with beads for over a month with no cigars in it. I filled it up and brought it to work with me and have not noticed that taste in any that I have smoked.

My only conclusion at this point was the humi was still new and was giving these odors out. Incidently when I pulled that credo apart to put the beads in it, it had a couple of white spots on it...mold being my guess. I did get a new bottle of distilled water also. sorry for the long post

It just seems weird to me that there is no bad smell at all coming from the humi yet they have this taste. Could it possibly be the plastic tube that holds the beads?? I know the rubber on the ends of the tube have that rubbery smell to them. Just a thought.

You can eliminate your palate as the problem by picking up a smoke at your b&m and smoking it with out putting it in your humi. I am not aware of anyone else having a problem with the tubes other than the smell, which I think viper corrected by getting new end caps. However since this problem came up just after you switched to the tubes it is possible they are the cause. You might try putting the beads in a stocking and see if the problem goes away.

I agree. Go get an old pair of pantyhose and use one of them to hold your beads. This is what I've got in both my coolers and they work like a charm.

I'm going to try the panty hose. How do you wet the beads while in the pantyhose?

I do the same thing, I don't spray my beads though, I stick the beads (in the pantyhose) inside a small tupper ware container with a couple of shot glasses full of distilled water and let the beads absorb the moisture. It takes a week or so, but that's my preferred method of charging my beads. That way the beads don't crack and get that dusty stuff all over my cigars. If you can't wait, just untie the pantyhose, pour the beads into a dish, spray them down, replace them in the pantyhose, tie the pantyhose back up and place the beads into your cooler/humidor.

If the relative humidity has risen since you changed humidification devices, your stogies might be over-humidified. That may cause them to taste a little harsh. Remember, as temperature rises so does the relative humidity so that, for argument's sake, the reading of 68% at 68 degrees will increase to 72% at 70 degrees. Try reducing the overall humidity.

I don't think it's your humidor. I think it's you. Doubt seriously it's the plastic tubes. How are you feeling? Been sick or just not up to snuff? Dental work or sinus/breathing with the season starting to change? Diet change? Different drinks? Different toothpaste or mouthwash? Turned on the heat in your home?

Look around and see if something has changed in your lifestyle.

I've still been having the same problem with the chemical taste in my cigars kept in my humidor. I ordered a few 5 packs last week and have stored these cigars in a tuppedor with THE PUCK that I was no longer using. I have smoked 2 cigars from this order and neither of them had a chemical taste to them. So it has to be something with either my humidor or the beads.

Sounds like you answered your own question.:)

Try an experiment. Take the cigar you want to smoke tomorrow out of the humi and leave it out overnight. Smoke it and see what you think.
