New Digital Hygrometer Reading WAY Off

Is this unusual?

I just bought a digital hygro, put it in the salt test bag for 36 hours, and it reads 66% instead of 75%. Is it normal for these devices to be this far off?

I have only tested 2 so far. Luckily both of mine were dead on. I have read here that up to 8 or 10% off is not uncommon. That's why we test them I suppose.

Yes, possible! Check the battery- or try a new battery. Do the test a 2nd time. I have about a dozen hygros, and only 2 are dead on! Use the Boveda test.

My first hygrometer was off by 16 when I did the salt test. The new ones I bought are the kind you can calibrate.

My digital's instructions have all said that no calibration is needed, especially any bag tests. Maybe bag tests mess with the digital calibration.:2

if it's not adjustable, return it!

they (the manufacturer) tells you "bag tests" aren't necessary because they don't want you to know that their product is giving incorrect readings-they may also tell you that the salt test will kill the electronics in digi hygros-i call BS & so do many members here-i've salt tested multiple hygros, some digi some analog & not one has been on yet-the solution that has worked the best for me is to purchase adjustable (able to be calibrated) digi hygros, made by hygroset, available at heartfelt or cigarmony-then you can be sure that you're getting the correct reading-i set mine when i get them, change the battery once a year & set it again-haven't had any trouble since i started doing this-some members have also had good results w/the western caliber & oregon scientific makes, i've not tried them personally

I should have been more clear. It is adjustable and I'm using the Boveda calibration pack. I'm just surprised that it was so far off.

yeah thats not good, I agree try batteries but that probably will do nothin. next time get either a wester caliber III or a calibrating one they always make me happy.

Mine where like that, adjust it up the difference and retest and then adjust again and so on till it reads 75.
