Nowhere to smoke... for now

Young Ape
With the cold weather approaching, my days of smoking seemed numbered. It's just not fun sitting outside, fire pit or not, when it's windy and 30 degrees. So what did I do? I went right to my wife, told her I was the king of the castle, and I needed a place to smoke indoors!

When she got up off the floor from laughing, she mentioned an article she read in one of her magazines where they made a little den out of a detached garage. She said if I wanted to, I could do that. Hey, that's good enough for me!

So I've started. And when I say I've started, I mean I've taken the "before" pics and done some preliminary measurements. It looks like the room will be about 10' x 12', I'm going to have the power company come and run a new 100-amp circuit directly to the garage (as it is now, whenever I turn on one of my saws the lights in the house dim), I'm going to run satellite and Internet cables underground, put in a fridge and a space heater, some comfortable chairs, and all the trimmings of a good manly space (the humi will remain in the house).

This is going to take quite a while because there's a ton of crap in the garage I have to get rid of (anyone interested in 13 Sun Sparc 20's?), and we're really busy running back and forth to dance, karate, horseback riding, football, choir practice, piano.... but I'm going to do it. If I'm lucky I'll get a little help (you reading this, Mike?) and we'll be out there before the real snows hit!

Here are some photos, and if anyone's interested, I'll try and keep updating this thread with my progress. The first is the view from the front, where I hope to put the den. The middle photo is the back view, including crap, which will remain storage. The one on the right is the one from my wife's magazine. I'm hoping it turns out something like that, albeit a lot less frilly.

I'm jealous...

...i'm a student and live in an apartment...haha :)

Hey man, I wish you the best of luck! Always funny how garages can accumulate sooo much stuff. Stuff you swear you threw out, or disapeared...

A little bit of cleaning needed, but at least you have the space! Keep us updated! Now, as long as you don't have matching curtains and glass bowls of potpourri, you will be frilly-free! ;)

Sounds great. I have a 10 x 16 cigar room out back. Love it. Live in it every night. I to have internet connection, digital cable, 1000 watt surround sound system, refrigerator, 2000 ct. humidor, ceiling fan, leather couch, recyclner. Make sure you have plenty of ventalation. I installed an attic fan in mine. Works great. If you have any questions PM me. Good luck and enjoy. :w

I was thinking of doing that exact same thing...my garage isnt insulated so I need to do that. I was thinking of installing a wood stove for heat. I like the idea of a separate electrical service.........hmmm...you may have just motivated me to get this thing going.......

Um?...Heaven at home? I think so!

Its great to have a garage. I have an attached garage with my nice comfortable chair, tv, stereo, and playstation in it. I bought one o those oil filled heaters you plug in and it has a timer. kicks on at 2pm so its nice and warm by 6pm and it turns off around 11pm. Only problem I have been having is the ventilation in the garage, the smell sometimes gets into the house a little and we all know the wife doesn't like that too much. But at least it is something.

I have a garage.

Garage herfing is great. Just throw every thing out and do it up !!!!

You need a man cave.

Looks like you've got a lot of work ahead but...

"a man's gotta do, what a man's gotta do!"

Best of luck and keep us posted on the progress.

garage herfin' is the bomb. a little kerosene heater out there, can't beat it :)

good luck with your project. looks like it'll be quite nice in the end :)

So I know it's been awhile since I've posted anything here, but I have been lurking, seeing what's going on. At any rate, after almost two years since my original post about building a "Man Den" out in our detached garage. Because of all the crap in my garage and the kids’ activities, I’d been putting it off. This year I’m turning 40, and my wife told me to focus on the man den and forget all the other projects until it’s completed. It’s time to do something for myself, she said.

So back at the end of June, I finally started. It still took a little while because there was a ton of crap in the garage and we were really busy running back and forth to horse shows, little league, football camp, etc.... but it's done.

I had a new electrical service added to the garage, rewired the whole thing with some nice, neat conduit, added a dividing wall, installed DirecTV and surround sound, put in a beverage center... we're ready to go!
