Oliva Series V Torpedo

I went over to the local B&M with a buddy of mine tonight and after perusing the Humidor a bit, decided to go with one of THE cigars of the moment, the Oliva Series V Torpedo.

Well, Of Course I expected big things from this Cigar with the Ratings and great reviews it's been getting not to mention I've smoked a couple of the Lancero's from this line and loved em so here's goes my review:

The Cigars construction appeared flawless but, the Cigar felt a little soft perhaps because it was underfilled ( I should have caught that at the store but was in a hurry). The Draw later confirmed this. This stick was just pulling way too loose for me. The flavors were there but, it was difficult to keep lit. The Burn was a bit off too. As you can tell, I was not impressed with this Cigar. My friends cigar seemed to have some of the same problems as well. Finally, after a good 30-40 minutes of struggling with these subpar sticks we pitched em with me getting maybe a 1/3 of the way through my cigar.

I've always liked Oliva's products but this was a bit baffling to me for a Cigar that is so highly praised. Maybe it was a bad box or maybe it could be Oliva trying to push out a hot product as fast as it can. I don't know. These are Hand Made products so mistakes happen. I'll definately give em another shot in the future.

sure that wasn't a typically "wet" stogie off the shelf of a B&M? They normally keep them to the high side of the accepted RH parameters, just makes the best business sense. So, smoking off the shelf there can get you spongey, hard to keep lit smokes.

Regardless, sorry to hear you had a crapper, those aren't cheap throw aways

No not this time. I can honestly say that because I looked at the ash at the foot of the cigar and could tell how loose the roll was. I don't know how to describe it other than by saying there was too much space.

Sounds like just a bad cigar - I've definitely had multiples from the same box that varied widely in construction quality. I think one of the biggest things you pay for in more expensive cigars is not flavor but construction and consistency.

Sounds like a fluke to me, these things tend to be awesome. Try another shop or wait for another delivery, don't lose hope yet!

Due to all the hype I picked up one on these at a local B&M today. I will try it later tonight.

Good or Bad it seems like this is a must try.

I'm not feeling the hype on these smokes. I've tried a few of the lanceros, a couple torps but have yet to fall in love with the flavor of these smokes. 2 of the 4 lanceros had serious draw issues and one of the torps blew up at the last 1/3.

They have a distinct flavor that I can't quite put my palate on but they just don't agree with me. More for you guys!

In terms of flavors, how would you describe this smoke? I'm trying to idenify what flavor it is I don't care for in this smoke so as to avoid other with similar taste profiles.

I would suggest trying another one...it's possible you had a bad one.

As a general rule of thumb, if you're looking for an explosion of flavor and activity in your mouth, the Serie V is probably not going to excite you much. It's a smoother more complex cigar (to me anyway) that lends itself to slow smoking and lots of "What the hell is that flavor I can't quite identify?!"

Funny thing is I didn't like the Lanceros, I preferred the Double Robustos far more, but then I smoke slower than most, so it really had time to open up for me.

I bought a couple torps and a couple Lanceros from a BOTL and by far, prefered the Lancero.

This really suprised me because well over 90% of the cigars I smoke are large RG.

These are not the greatest cigars in the world, but, they are good and in the neighborhood of $4 a pop. I plan on buying a box of Lancero at the Oliva event next month.

Quality control on the V line seems to be suffering with the increase in demand. I've noted poor construction on a few of the V lanceros that I've smoked recently (uneven fill, tough draw, clumps of tobacco falling out upon cutting the cap). The bands have even been unevenly cut and applied, sometimes with excess adhesive. They're great cigars when you get a good one but about half of them have construction issues in my experience.

never have tried the Oliva V, let alone the Torp. I've tried the smaller Oliva G's and LOVE THEM.

i keep hearing so much hype about the torp v's......might just have to pick one up tomorrow & give it a whirl.

Haven't met an Oliva I didn't like. Of course have yet to try the Series V. Will have to try soon. Coworker recomended the Lancero. Maybe tonight.

:tpd: I picked up a few V torp's from Rob at Taboo Cigars and the two I have burned were nothing less than outstanding. The Cigar's construction was great and very well packed and the burn was incredible. IMO these are outstanding smokes

I had the V this afternoon and I can say that fortunately I did not have any of the problems that Thurm described.

The burn was excellent and the draw as actually a bit tight. The flavor was good, like every Oliva I have had, but it didn't know my socks off.

Again this was not a bad smoke at all but I don't think that it is worth all the hype, I could be just as happy with $2 or $3 smoke. :2

Well I had bought a couple more from the same Box. We'll see how these smoke. It could have been just a couple of bad ones in the box. I remember smoking a RP Edge a couple yrs back and I thought it was terrible. I smoked another not too long after and thought it was great. Thank you all for your input.

Had the same experience...really disappointing cigar

I had the same experience with the draw and fighting this stick to keep it lit. It won't stop me from trying another one but the first one just flat irritated me.

Every "V" that I have had has been loose. No problem with the burn, just the draw was to easy. I have had the torps, but am going to try the Lancero next.
