Oliva "Special S" Review

longknocker

SilverBack
A special-aged sun-grown from the Oliva family.

The Special ‘S’ is an attractive handmade that boasts a silky sun-grown wrapper grown in Ecuador. After fermentation, this choice leaf is aged in Spanish cedar for a minimum of 5 years, adding rich layers of flavor to this (already) robust and flavorful piece of tobacco. Chock full of Nicaraguan Habano long-fillers, Special S is a complex, full-bodied premium loaded with rich, creamy undertones backed by a pleasant aroma.

Found this beautiful smoke in the bottom of my humi today and decided to light it up. Sorry, I can't seem to recall the age on it, but it has rested at least 4 months at 65%/74 degrees. This was the Diadema from CI that is rather expensive at $200+ for a box of 20. RG 48X7". Initial pre-light aroma was wonderful with a sweetness & touch of spice. Initial draw & burn were perfect and even. I noticed a slightly sweet flavor with a touch of spice that persisted throughout the 1hr. smoke. I had no burn or tunneling issues that I had on occasion with other Olivas. It was a very good smoke, IMO, rated 8.5/10. I still prefer the Oliva "O" and "G", however, at a much lower price and equal, if not better, flavor & aroma. Anyone else tried these?

Thanks for the input!

Greg

I have yet to try the 'S' line from Oliva. I have been wanting to try these guys for a while now, but my budget keeps me in the 'G' and 'V' range. I absolutely love the 'V' line with it's complex flavors and it's robust kick! The 'G' line was a wonderful smoke as well, but my preference is still with the 'V' line at this point. Who knows, maybe I will splurge and try an 'S' and that may take the place of the 'V'! IMO you cannot go wrong with any of the Oliva's!! Nice review!!

Other than the 'V' this is my favorite Oliva. Thanks for the review:tu

Thanks, NJ, you need to try one and let me know how they compare to the "V"!:tu

Big fan of the Special S. Don't smoke them near as often as the V's, O's, or the Special G's though.

just had one this last sat-your review is spot on-i felt like it was more med bodied than full though-a good stick, but for the $ there's those i like better

Definitely one of Oliva's better sticks. Sadly, I hear they are discontinued, but luckily you can still find them places.

I had the robusto and didn't care for it. It was one-dimensional and boring. I don't think it is worth $6.75 a stick. I like all the other Oliva's but not this one.

Nice review :tu

I love the tobacco flavor and the sweetness throughtout the cigar. Very consistent.

My B&M has the Special S tubos on the bargain rack for a steal. I bought one just because it was a tubo and it was Oliva, so now I've gotta' smoke it soon to see if I should go grab more while they're still there.

As blindsmoke stated, these gem's are discontinued. Fortunately, like Snake said, they can still be found at some B&M's and some even have them discounted which makes them a great buy. The wrapper on the S really does make this cigar shine. You can really pull the cedar notes out of it along with a rich tobacco taste. If you haven't had one and can still locate it, I definitely recommend picking one up.

Stogie King, where have you been? Hows the accounting degree coming along? I have never had the "S" but must argee that you can't go wrong with the oliva. When are we going to Porter House? ps: try the "O" as well.

Great review! I had one of these a while back and I'm kind of sorry to say that I was not impressed. Maybe it was a bad stick, but for that price I was pretty dissappointed. I'd like to try some more to see if any others are better, but at that price I'm a little timid.

Hmm i have one of these little suckers in the bottom of my humi.. was going to save him for a cold winter day... buttt i think ill have him tonight :) what do you think he'll like better? grey goose on the rocks, or a few fingers of evan williams?? :tu

I heard from my Oliva sales rep today that Oliva will be discontinuing the special S this fall. Has anyone else heard this?

Welcome to the forums! Be sure to read the rules and make an introduction post in the new member forum :tu

To address your inquiry, I was under the impression that these had already been discontinued, being why they're getting harder to find.

Can anybody clear up the confusion then?
