Opus X!?!?

Maturing Primate
Well I've finally had an Opus X cigar! I was on the beach at sunset and wanted to enjoy a high quality cigar. I have been waiting to enjoy this cigar for some tme and have several others resting. I just can's sit down and smoke a $15.00 stick for no reason. (I'm sure I'll catch some grief for that statement). Opus really was not really what I'd thought it would be. I was not impressed and found the cigar to be middle of the pack at best. What are some of your thoughts?

That's just me. You will find most folks here like them with a little age (3 - 5 years) but for some reason I have always liked the fresh ones better.

Fresh Opus put me on my tail and took me a year to go back to one. Once I returned I just can't get enough. Hands down one of the best cigars with a lil age, But that's just me and my :2

I DO NOT LIKE ANY OPUS X....they seem, to me at least, to have way too many burn issues and inconsistency in the brand..plus, for the last few years...I have found ALL Fuentes to taste the same...boring...Just my thoughts...save your time and effort chasing down the Opus when you can get Tatuaje and Illusione and LG and MANY OTHERS more readily available for a lower price tag...Just my opinion....

I will say that the Opus X is a great smoke. I just wish they were a little easier to get a hold of. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for in a smoke. Something real nice w/o a ton of spice!

IMO, the Opus X is a marketing gimmick.

Agreed, but a brilliant gimmick at that.

I like the Opus, but I actually like the Anejo better. I have had Opus straight out of the box and...eh. They're ok. However, with a good deal of age (2, 3, 4+ years), you are talking about a very, very special cigar.

I have had a few Opus X that blew me out of the water with complexity, flavor and power, and even more that have bored me with one-dimensional, bland mediocrity. It has been nothing short of a crapshoot...age, vitola, whatever. I haven't smoked one for about a year because the last few I smoked did nothing for me. I would smoke them regularly if they were all as good as a few of them have been for me.

I've had three. Liked nary a one of them. Eh, but that's the great thing about cigars, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

I had one a while back and didn't really care for it too much, although the strength of it was almost overwhelming. I'd like to try a few more before I really state an opinion though.

I have one I've been holding onto for a while. I will probably end up giving it to my snooty french bother-in-law for Christmas. I have yet to smoke one.

Had a Perfexxion #5, saved it for my graduation as a 'special' cigar for that special day (I thought a cigar, at that petit corona size, priced at $32,- must be really really special). It was about 2 to 2.5 years old, so with some age.
The smell was amazing, no really really amazing, the best dmn smelling cigar i can remember.
Lit it, with high expectations by now, and hello disappointment! :gn
It was mediocre at best. Good construction and all, but no flavour, no power, no taste. Very very mild and flavour less.
That kinda killed my optimistic mood...

:tpd:

What he said. One word of advice...the perfection 5 is just plain harsh...pass on it. I've had some luck with the perfection 4 and the petit Lancero which you can get in Columbus right now.

Can I ask what is "some time"? Anyone who has followed the progression of Opus X cigars, from the original release can probably say that these cigars are very different from what they originally were. I smoked Opus X cigars from the OR slide lid boxes and man I wish I still had those.

What did you "think it would be"? Just curious how the cigar failed to meet your expectations. Was it flavorless, did it burn hot or irregular, was it too sweet or too spicy for your tastes?

As one of the few non CC smokes that I still smoke semi-regular. I find that Opus X still have a very unique flavor profile and in my personal opinion smoke much better after at least 3 years of age. :2 I would say to try and seek out a Opus X with some serious age on it and give it another shot.
Also there are plenty of other NC cigars in that price range that depending on your tastes you may find enjoyable.

Like any "luxury" brand, marketing makes up a big part of the equation. But I have to defend the Opus X cigar. If there was not something special to this cigar when it was released in 1995(?) we wouldn't be still talking about it now.
There were plenty of high ticket, hyped cigars during the cigar boom, that did not have the substance to survive and fizzled out. Opus X is still going strong.
