Outrageous prices in Canada

I previously posted about my belief that Cubans are no better than NCs. After a week in the Pacific Northwest, I am amazed at how much the B&Ms charge for cigars (I haven't seen any NCs in any shops I've been to in Victoria, Vancouver, or Whistler). Fortunately, I brought my own cigars. Otherwise, I would've spent a small fortune to get one per day. I don't understand how shops charge so much for cigars or how enough patrons buy them to support the high prices. Just my opinion.

Surprised they haven't been taxed out of business, poor guys. The USA is trying that approach based on proposed legislation... :ss

As a Canadian I can tell you its true. The issue arises from our HEAVY taxation of tobacco. Please refer the thread where Snakeyes was changed $ 4000+ for a box pass. http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=94343

Don't worry about our B&M's they do just fine. We have all grown up with these prices and are aware of the tax. 98% of the local B&Ms business comes from cuban cigars which most of us are happy to pay the price for as they are super good and you of course want a "solid" source. Plus for the most part they seem to be simular to European prices once I figure in exchange and shipping.

The only concern would be if US companies started shipping to Canada. However most US companies I have found to ship to Canada charge an already heavy mark up price i.e. $ 25.00 US for an Opus X for this money I can get a great cuban with no shipping issues.

It is funny though alot of Canadians wish they could get a good steady supply of non cubans - so it seems no matter what side the fence your on you have problems.

That being said if you still feel bad for us please send your nearest Canadian a box of nice non cuban cigars.

I've actually heard (only heard) that fake cubans are rampant at B&M stores in Canada. The only sure bet is to use a LCdH, and even that's not 100% foolproof.

Thats a pretty far out statement. Although you only heard it, thats ridiculous. A B&M is a respected institute like any other in the USA, with extremely knowledgeable people behind the desks. Although I cannot purchase cigars from them because of the government taxation I still respect their product.

Obviously your never going to be 100% guaranteed anything, but if you know your stuff you should be able to spot a fake from a mile away.

Fakes are getting better and better all the time. Have you ever looked at the stuff on justfakes.com? I'm sure even every now and then the sharpest eyes miss something.

When I was in Victoria a few weeks ago I paid $7.95 for a Romeo y Julieta petit corona which didn't seem too expensive considering that the B&M was a very small, traditional tobacconist. I've paid much more in the States for some real dog rockets.

Your right you can get some nice fakes up here however if you check with Havana House the Canadian distributor of Cubans (cigars not people) they will tell you who is authorized and who is not - also on there web site. In fact I have even checked if my local B&M had recently ordered a particular box and they were more then happy to provide the information.

For the most part I believe being Havana House authorized is the same as being a LcDH (sorry if I got it wrong) they have a lot to lose in the event they are found not sell 100 % authentic product especially since my local B&Ms buisness is 98 % cuban.

Well good on you for doing your homework! Maybe the problem is with visitors that do not know better.

Outrageous prices in Canada is an understatement. Check out the cigar shop at the 'Niagara Fallsview Casino'. It's a nice place shop if you hit it big in the casino. I inquired about the price of a SIGLO VI Tubo. Ready? $99 + tax. I passed on this deal.:D

I think that most B&Ms in touristy areas will have mostly Cubans as that is the market to American visitors, and likely the best mark up for sales. I find that if you ask about NCs, the merchants will usually direct you to a small grouping in a humidor near the bottom and back corner. I agree with you that Cubans are not all that superior and suffer the same frustrations when looking for a cigar in my local B&M. I am envious of US pricing and ease of finding a good box of cigars.
