Padilla - So what are they like now?

Evolving Lead Gorilla
Okay, so I've been reading a lot about how Pepin isn't rolling for Padilla anymore and then the whole Holt's unpleasantness. My question is, does anyone have any information on the fresh Padilla's? I just ordered some 68's and I'm curious if they are going to be the same old delicious 68's that I've come to know and love, or is it going to be some weird cigar that tastes foreign to me.

Thanks!!!

I actually just talked to a guy who smoked a fresh 32 and said its better then before. Construction is top notch and the tasted wonderful. I cant wait to compare because im a huge fan of his stuff.

I wouldn't think the '68 would be affected by the Pepin split since they weren't made by him. According to a post from Ernesto on another board, they are made by the Cuban Aguilar family in Honduras.

I was gonna make the same post because i bought a box of Miami 8&11's over the winter and I have really enjoyed them. I am down to my last stick and want to order some more. I normally don't smoke coronas but these sticks have a unique flavor and have got me hooked.:w

I'm not terribly worried. After all the Habano gets great reviews and it isn't a Pepin blend. I've got a new batch of Achilles that'll be delivered today. The original was Pepin (I think), the current batch is not. I'm so anxious to try one I think I'll smoke it right off the truck.

Those Habanos are yummy. The last one I had, I didn't want it to end! Deelish.

As an aside, I was psyched about the Achilles and happened to see a box on CBid so I went for it - not more than an hour after I won, I hopped over to CI for something and saw them there for $50 a box (bundle) - HALF of what i just paid on CBid :r:r:r Oh well, I was lead to think that they were ultra-limited sticks that were worthy of killing for. Apparently the ones to die for were the first run of that line.

In an effort to do some dollar-cost-averaging, I just bought another bundle - this time from CI :ss

I just saw those Achilles on the back cover of the CI catalog. Hmmmm. I wonder if Joe or the daily or weekly special will have these soon. Often CI will have a quick special on the new releases to get folks to try them. If there is a special that will be my next purchase for sure.

If you do decide to smoke one OTT please let us know what you think.

My Padilla Achilles just arrived! I managed to keep a few sticks out to smoke while the rest went into their week long vacation in the freezer.

The one I'm smoking now has entirely too loose of a draw - kind of like a straw. Normally, that doesn't bother me because I'll just slow down a bit and be more conscious of my puffing. Besides, I singled this one out because it felt loose and I wanted to "get rid of it" lol. The others in the bundle are probably just fine.

That aside, the taste is great! Very nice, full-bodied flavor, a faint spiciness with some leather. I'm getting a really nice nicotine buzz so it seems to be a fairly strong smoke so far.

In a sentence, I'd buy more. :ss:ss

Yes, the old ones were, and yes, the new ones aren't...

I'm awaiting your review. I'm down to less than two boxes of original release, and I'd like to know that the new ones will be good.

Padilla was producing cigars for the USA market before Don Pepin. Pepin only made some of the Padilla lines. Oliva and Tabacalera Fernandez also made lines for Ernesto. Your Padilla series '68 is produced in Honduras by Flores Tobacco; no Pepin involvement at all. You can be sure it will taste the same.

I have every confidence Ernesto isn't going to sell any crap with his name on it; even those cigars peddled by Keith Myers.

I am also really looking forward to trying cigars made in Padilla's new USA factory.

The last 5 pack of Padilla Habanos I had were very disappointing. Flavor was harsh, no complexity. Something was wrong with this batch.

The Padilla's have really taken a hit in our B&M since the split with Pepin. It's to bad because IMHO there still a really good cigars.

I've had two Padillas in my life, both from CI,

1. Padilla Cedro
2. Padilla Obsidian

The first was tolerable, but very mild. The 2nd was horrid.

I do want to try the Habano and the Hybrid.

Thanks, Billy. They seem to be selling like crazy. I grabbed a bundle today before they sold out. My "wait for a deal" plan crashed and burned.

:hn

The '32 is very, very close to the Pepin made cigars. They are quite good. I have even speculated that these are old Pepin stock. We shall see in the coming months. The Miami is not close, at all. It is much sweeter than the Pepin blend, imo. Not bad but they don't hit me same way. The '48's are just terrible.

The thing that gets me is that the price tag is still the same. Even though they are being produced in Honduras where costs are nowhere near the costs of production in Miami. I would have hoped they would lower the price point a bit.
