Peppin JJ Maduro

Redneck Primate
Don Peppin Garcia Series JJ Maduro

I was saving this for Friday, but after reading all the reviews I can’t wait. So, it’s Thursday night and I’m ripping this puppy out of the humidor and firing it up with extreme prejudice.

Beautiful stick. Looks well constructed. Foot looks promising. Triple capped. The wrapper and aroma is making me drool. You guys are lucky I took pre-light pics before I ate it.

showin off my newly aquired cutter... (it's not easy to take a picture of yourself cutting a cigar)

Light up: powerful blast of pepper, much more than I enjoy. Very sharp. After a few puffs it mellows a bit.

Draw is perfect. Burn is even.

1st 3rd: still overpowered by pepper. Short white ash. Begins to develop other flavors, maybe coco with a barely detectable sweetness… overpowered by the pepper.

2nd 3rd: I long to taste the flavors in the background but I can’t get by the pepper. Sweet and pleasant aftertaste. Great aroma. Too much pepper for my taste.

Last 3rd: Hints of Rum and cloves in the background, still too sharp and peppery for my taste.

that picture didn't come out right but the Moon is perfectly in focus.

I had a Peppin at the B&M that I enjoyed, I’m surprised that this one has been such a disappointment.

I know this is gonna hurt a lot of feelings here in SC because so many of the guys I talk to at the shop are Peppin enthusiasts. This just is not my bag. I’ll try some others in the hopes that I enjoy one as much as my first experience with Peppin.

I hope I don’t get uninvited to Varderherf.

Sorry guys… be gentle with your comments.

To each there own. Never had one.............yet.

The one JJ Maduro I've had was fabulous. A lot of complaints recently about a number of Pepin blends, I think the increase in production has them shipping fresher than normal, I'd be resting anything for a few months minimum.

I'll take any extras you don't want - totally to help out, of course. :)

I can understand how it's not everyone's cup of tea. I think they are a little too peppery, as you say, when they're fresh. The funny thing is: every time I put the cut on a fresh one of these, or most of the Pepein blues as well, my first thought pre-light is "ammonia." But then, I end up loving the cigar for it's strong kick and unwavering spice throughout. Just like every other manufacturer though, not all of them are gonna be great! Thanks for being honest -- you actually made me think about my blind love for the DPG. Truth be told, I'm more of a Tat freak -- but I find that IF I can get at least 3-4 months on this cigar, it is a thing of beauty. And what a value we got on these last week from JoeCigar, eh?
