My friend assures me how real they are because he had them authenticated by another friend over the phone.... yikes.
One of the huge drawbacks of verifying Cuban cigars "over the phone".
My friend assures me how real they are because he had them authenticated by another friend over the phone.... yikes.
Are you trying to make a joke here? They look good to me! You know you keep hearing about quality control down there, maybe the roller just had an off day...
My friend called me the other night...
Friend: "Hey! I just got a box of cuban cigars!!!"
Me: "Really!? How?"
Friend: "My friend just got back from a cruise that stopped at Nassau..."
Before he went any further, I knew where this story was headed. A "friend of a friend" story about some cruise stop cigars. This story was textbook. The friend got them from a street vendor who was selling boxes of Montecristo #1s' for $100 and he worked him down to $85.
I meet up with my friend later who hands me 3 of them in a plastic bag. I hold them up to look at them and the shredded tobacco filler is already starting to spill out the bottom. The wrapper is poorly glued, poorly printed and poorly cut. My friend assures me how real they are because he had them authenticated by another friend over the phone.... yikes.
Examine them for yourself...
What's tough is my friend is a great guy who is just so happy about his box of cubans. The fact that he GAVE me 3 of them makes me realize that it's too nice a gesture for me to tell him the truth so I'm going to play along till the bitter end and smoke one of the these with him...
These were not even close. The wrapper was cut out with scissors and on very thin paper. The Monte 1's are 6 1/2 inches and these were 6. They stink and are soft with some green discoloration.
Ending the embargo will not get rid of the proliferation of fake cuban cigars. Many believe, including me, that it will increase (at least for the first couple of years).
