Pre-Castro 1958

Young Ape
So, I'm getting married today and my soon to be Father in law gave me a box of 10 cigars. The box says "Pre-Castro Cubans". The seal is Dominican and the band says "Pre-Castro Cubans 1958" It also says dominican republic. So, Does anyone know what these are. He seems to think they are really from pre embargo times but I have serious doubts about that. Is it possible that they have been repackaged and rebanded?

Not likely. If you posted a picture of the box, that might help us help you.

Congrats on getting married. All the best to you and your wife-to-be.

Found these online at bestcigarprices.com
From the Dominican Republic. Filler: Habana (Crop of 1998) Binder: Indonesian Wrapper: Bahia from Brazil From the Cuban Vintage Crop of 1959: 100% Natural Cuban Leaf Tobacco grown in Vuelta, Abajo, Cuba.

Oh.... Congratulations!

Doubt that the cigars are Cuban ... but what do I know? There are a lot more knowledgeable apes around here. Just posted to congratulate you on your marriage.

Even if they are Cubans who cares, and as a matter of fact any pre-embargo cuban is gonna suck. You can only age a cigar so long before it becomes crap.

bestcigarprices.com New Global... those guys are funny. They do anything to make sure you get the lowest price possible good people.

I dont trully agree with that comment. I have heard and read on here from plenty of people that have had pre-embargo cubans and they were fantastic. If properly stored they can last that long, perhaps longer. Perhaps someone knows a bit more.

Hell, Kennedy bought a huge supply of pre-embargo cubans, so they had to be good.

Kennedy bought a large supply of RyJs (His Favorite smoke) before the Embargo went into effect. A cigar that has hung around for so long tends to lose its flavor even if you store it properly.

This statement is false. I have smoked many havanas that are pre-embargo and for that matter pre-Castro that were excellent cigars.
I have many in my collection that I place a high value on because they are exquisite cigars!

Sure, you may smoke a few and get a cigar that has expired, but you cannot make a "blanket" statement such as the one above based upon a few samplings.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm too busy at the moment to post a pic so that will have to wait until tommorrow. The cigars do not look old, but they say "serie 1958". Alright, I'm off to get hitched, ugh! haha.

i honestly do not think you have a clue as to what you are talking about. i personally have not smoked a pre-castro cigar or pre-embargo cigar except for the ones that you can buy legally here in the states but i know people that have and deffinitly know people here on the boards that have and all the reviews are that they are excellent. you can age anything for as long as you want, as long as it is stored correctly.

Allright, honeymoon's over, back to business. Here are some pictures of the box and one of the cigars. What do you all think?

Interesting, I've never seen that band before. When I first started reading the thread I figured you were talking about the JR Genuine Pre-EMbargo Counterfeit's made by Perdomo, but I don't beleive those were from the Dominican.

Oh and I too must chime in on the pre-emabargo tasting like crap comment. Though I've only had one pre-embargo, it wasn't crap at all. I wouldn't say it was the best cigar I've ever had, but it was different then anything else I've had.

If I'm correct in assuming that you recieved an un-opened box of ten cigars, then, if these were pre-embargo cigars or contained pre-embargo cuban tobacco, then there would have been a certificate within or on the box certifying that the tobaccco was pre-embargo cuban. This certification has been present on all pre-embargo cigars I have purchased or observed (I'm not sure, but I think it is a U.S. Custom's required certificate). This also assumes these were U.S. based purchases. Otherwise, I would have to say they are Nics using marketing to look like cubans.

I will gladly smoke any member's 50 year old cuban cigar that has been properly stored to make sure there isn't any doubt about their flavor!! Call me at my private number (BR-549) to make arrangements!! ;)
