Pressed for Information

I'm new to cigar smoking and have been tiring many different brands, styles and shapes (I'm enjoying them too). I just tried a couple of box pressed cigars and wanted to know the difference with boxed pressed and a normal hand rolled cigar. How does boxed press cigars change flavors in the cigar, etc.

Your input is much appreciated
Thanks
Michael

Obviously, I like your signature quote... :ss

I have not been able to tell the diference in smoking the box pressed from a regular rolled. Now, some figurados seem to change based on the type and amount of tobacco as you smoke into fatter parts of it. I even smoked a triangular shaped cigar last week. Interesting shape, but for me it didn't seem to change the smoke significantly. Just my :2 .

Welcome to the Jungle... :ss

As far as I can tell, box pressing is almost strictly aesthetic. Box pressed cigars seem to taste a bit more..."rich" i suppose would be the word, but I think that's just coincidence. Hopefully somebody who know's more than us will chime in sooner or later.

I haven't noticed any taste difference in box pressed cigars. I did see this when I did a quick search:

What is box-pressed?
A cigar, while fresh and moist, is actually pressed in a wood box and the pressure creates a perfectly square shaped cigar. The box-pressed cigars usually burn long and give a more flavorful taste.

So there may be something to it.

Honestly, for a non-aged cigar, box-pressing really is irrelevant. As a cigar ages, strongly box-pressed cigars have less surface area exposure to the air and should age slower and better than regular dress box cigars.

This makes alot of sense. I've been thinking about it for the last couple hours, and I was thinking it must have something to do with aging. Most cigars aged before sale are box-pressed. When thinking of this, the LFD factory press comes to mind.

Plain old round cigars will generally become box pressed to a degree over time if packaged in a regular 25er box. Cigars that come in cabinets of 25 or 50 (think bundle in a box) tend to stay round.

IIRC Padron and other cigars that have a very pronounced box press shape are that way because the use cigar molds that give that look right from the get go.

I don't think there is much difference in flavor/burn except for the generally accepted notion that cigars age better in a cabinet than in dress boxes.

from what i know there is not a difference in a box pressed cigar to a rounded cigar. aging wise it will make a difference but as far as anything you find at a b&m it wont make any real difference.

You didn't hear this from me, but I read that box pressing was originally done in Cuba to keep the cigars from rolling off the table. If this opens me up to questioning, i will begin a search to the link, but i swear I ain't lyin.

I have heard that also but attributed it to "folklore." I would think that it was created purely for aesthetics, but that's just me.

Major thanks for your input everyone. I tried a JAVA 58 boxed pressed and really enjoyed it a lot. Anyone has a suggestion of a boxed pressed cigar for me to try? Like I said, I'm just a Young Chimp out here.

I was under the impression that cigars were box pressed for space. I recall reading that manufacturers box press cigars because it allows them to fit the same number of round cigars in a smaller box. because box pressed cigars line up flush on the box as opposed to round cigars which leave gaps. :2

I used to be pretty partial to the Maria Mancini Magic Mountain (esp. the maduro) before my tastes wandered in another direction.
