Pretty Heavy fine for Cigars??

I'm in Southern California... and it's pretty much no smoking everywhere I go... which is fine with me... I usually have my toddler daughter with me so I'm not eager to light up anyways. I don't have the whole story, but the guy seems to have just blatantly disregarded a law... so it seems he should have expected it. I may be reading it wrong, but it looks like there are ways around the "no smoking" thing that he could have tried.

:tpd: If it is not illegal in the house as well. This country sucks!

Some places are ALREADY considering laws making it illegal to smoke in your own apartment if the same building houses other apartments if I recall correctly...don't think they have started going after free standing homes yet. But every time they pass any form of anti-smoking law, just makes it easier for them to go stricter next time

I think they will have a very hard time enforcing a non smoking law in your own house, and if you think this country sucks there are many more you can go to.

it's already "illegal" to smoke in my house... I have to smoke outside.

If I tried to smoke inside, I would be subject to a sex and conversation embargo.

Dude, he was found guilty on 35 counts committed over six months.

I'm not saying it's right or fair, but it is the law and he broke it.

If you can't pay the fine, don't do the crime.

Peaceful civil disobedience is the way to go. If my hometown passes a no smoking law, I will smoke where I choose. I will fight this with peaceful civil disobedience and will encourage all my brothers in arms (BOTLs) to do the same. They cannot sit on us if we refuse to remain silent and be trampled on. I respect nonsmokers and will not smoke in restaurants and other family venues, but in bars, joints and pubs I will smoke and damn those who try to stop me. Fight the good fight, don't just sit there and let them demonize us!!!!!

Come down to NOLA after January 1st and I am sure you will see a lot of this. I don't like smoke in restaurants but I firmly believe that the owner should be able to determine for themselves as to whether or not it will be allowed, customers can freely choose which restaurants or bars they will patronize, and employees can choose whether or not to work for companies allowing smoking.

It would be nice if people cherished their rights and freedoms enough to not encroach on those of others but it seems as if everyone wants to protect us from ourselves and this applies to any number of issues. When was the last time legislation was passed guaranteeing our right to anything? Try ignoring or intentionally breaking one of any number of foolish, unjust laws and you'll quickly see the wrath of whoever claims the title of moral majority at the moment. The worst part is that whenever something along these lines comes up people are quick to denounce the new law but eventually toe the party line or roll over and play dead instead of practicing a little civil disobedience or takeing other real action such as voteing for people who respect all rights and freedoms as opposed to only the ones you prefer or benefit from.

That's a beautiful post TU09. If only more people would use their brain and realize, "Hey, this bar is full of smokers, I'll just go to a different one." Rather, someone has to complain that people are enjoying themselves.

I think it would be very hard to put forth a law not allowing you to smoke in or outside your own house. I firmly believe that an establishment's owner should make the choice. Customer's don't like it, they dont have to shop there. I hate that their is no smoking allowed in the local B&M here. Shop owner said its a travesty that you cant sit and enjoy your cigar with a cup of coffee in his own store with his friends and customers alike.

I am not that interested in politics, but any local concerns on tobacco and taxing and related pop up somewhat often here.

Thank you,
Dave.

This is the greatest country in the world!!!

No, and we have not been for a long time. Bill Marher said it best when he said "we need to stop calling ourselfs the best, until we start acting like it."

I love America, but boy do i hate the idiots that run/inhabbit it.:u

My fav country (other than the USA) is Canada. i love Canada, there woman, there shows (ok,only 1) there soda (jones soda rules) and a lot of other things.

But i digress, the real topic at hand here is the fine. it is a simple formula:

Idiot+Breaking law= DEE DEE DEE.

Newtons law:

"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction"

COMMON SENSE

There are better, more sensible ways to fight the law.

One last tibit of wisdom.

"I fought the law and the law won, i fought the law and the law won"

done rambling.

(yes i realize i called other idiots, though can not spell or type worth a damn)

I think it would be very hard to put forth a law not allowing you to smoke in or outside your own house.

A law wouldn't be worded like that. It would be worded something like "Tobacco and tobacco related products are hereby controlled substances that are illegal to grow, make, sell, or purchase." If you want to prevent people from using it, you don't ban places they can use it, you just ban the manufacturing, sale and purchase of it.

It will of course be done in the guise of public health, just as places are now starting to ban trans-fats.

Yes, and there is a very good example that applies here... marijuana. I certainly don't intend to come across as some disenfranchised pothead but the truth is the stuff is less harmful than tobacco or alcohol and delegalizing it spawned a black market to grow and contribute to violent crime and the funding of all sorts of nasties. Same thing with alcohol in prohibition, the delegalization caused the growth of a ciminal element associated with the new black market that emerged as the government once again attempted to protect us from ourselves. They may be right though, we have already shown our inability to make our own decisions by electing the people who push for such laws.

I agree, this is the greatest nation on earth but it does still "suck." We have a lot of room for improvement and if we ever become so arrogant as to forget that then we deserve to lose our rights and freedoms.

You know what we need to help all these bans? We need a president with a beard. Because you know if he's president and has a beard. He's going to smoke a couple of stogies. Just look back on most of the presidents that had beards. A lot of them, generally, smoked. Im getting tired of these clean cut lying canidates. We need someone rough and tough looking that you know has actually had to work in life and understands what relaxtion that a cigar can bring.

Also i think a nother problem they should focus on more are the obesity rates for the children. Obesity is defainately more harmful than a couple of cigars. Just look up some of the future complications with Obesity and look at the ones for smoking. Obesity has A LOT.

I just don't know why they put a ban when people can choose whether or not they want to go into thoughs bars. If people don't want to inhale smoke, go to a different bar or resturant. Why not put like a sign or something outside to let not smokers know. "Enter at own risk"
