Problem with wrapper unravelling!

I have one humidor and one coolador, both with beads, both with 65% RH...Some of my cigars from the coolador will start to unravel from the lit end of the cigar...On occasion, the wrapper cracks a bit while I'm smoking, and at times they are hard to draw on....I have just started to dry box them for 24 hrs before smoking as it appears they are overhumidified!!! Does this seem right to you??? I a 3 month old noob and would appreciate your recommendations. Thanks, Wally

Hey Wally,

I have had a few wrappers on my cigars start to crack, peel and unravel while in the humidor even at 65% humidity. Not sure why this happens but I am usually able to repair them with fruit pectin. You can usually get this at your local grocery store. I poured it into an empty nail polish bottle and can paint it on as needed. Once dry, it holds very well and do not notice any change in the flavor of the cigar. Good luck!

What brand of cigars are unravelling? What kind of wrapper? They're not V Vegas "A's" are they?

You might want to check the calibration of your hygrometers, they might read 65%, but it might be a lot higher in the humi if they are off.

How long have the sticks been in your humi? The wrapper might be 65, but if the stick is still 70 from the B&M or vendor, it's gonna split when it gets hot as the filler expands even more. I forgot to look where you are, but taking a stick from a warm temp to a cold one abruptly to smoke it can also cause that problem.

For years keep humi drawer stocked with LGC as one of my daily smokers, at around 67%, and never had an issue with the wrapper. As far as that goes, no wrapper issues with any of the cigars. As members have already noted, may want to calibrate your hygrometer, temp/RH. Not sure how glycol fits into the equation, when I purchased the humi some 10yrs ago per instructions, add 1 tablespoon per gal. distilled water, and have tried to stick to it.

To me..unravelling is usually a dry stick and splitting is usually an overly humid stick. I bumped my humidity up to 72 because of this problem. Also, one way to spot wet stick is to look at the leading edge...does it have a rise? you can see it has warped just back from the burn edge. That is water/humidity boiling up and warping the wrapper. This warping is none other than an overly humid stick. If you don't have the warping it is probably dry due to misreading on the hygrometer.

I seem to have this problem only with Camacho Corojo's for some reason. I'll have to give the pectin thing a shot to see it that helps. Never would have thought of that.

Keep in mind that in western MA right now the humidity is in the 23 to 28 percent area and it is much cooler than the inside of your humidor. If you have the cigar outside for much time before smoking it, the wrapper will dry out and will start to unravel. Try to keep them humidified until you are set to light it. I would rather have a wrapper split than unravel. Hope this helps.

In what section would you might find this?

Seasonal/canning supplies. You might also find it at a local hardware store that is not a big box store which sells canning supplies. It is also available at b&m's with trade names such as Cigar Doctor.
