Hey all,

I have been wondering about something for a while. I have seen a good number of people base purchases and overall "likes" & "dislikes" of a cigar based on a Puff Puff Pass (PPP). So it has me wondering if a PPP is an accurate way to review a cigar?

I know this is strictly a subjective question, so there is no right or wrong answer. I just wanted to get the opinions and general consensus of my fellow BOTL's.

Above is a simple yes or no poll on the subject at hand. I would appreciate your discussion as well. Thanks so much.

I think a PPP is like reading the liner notes on a novel.
You get a pretty good idea of what you are getting into, but not the whole story.

I have had some excellent cigars in a PPP. However, being smoked rather quickly can lead a cigar to getting hot and may not be a good basis for purchase decisions. Just MHO.

I think it really depends on two actors, the first is how the people in the ppp are smoking the cigar, second is how the cigar holds up in the ppp.

Some people hit the ppp cigars like a rogue hoover vacuum, and the cigars (dependant on age) dont take to well to that, so the fast burn mutes the flavors.

PPPs' are great way to test cigars, that you otherwise might never try, also they allow you to find out where you want to spend your hard earned $.

Voted No.

However, I think PPPing is a wonderful way to get exposed to and understand different cigar flavors which are more easily highlighted by the contrast between cigars in contrast with other cigar flavors.

:tpd: I could not agree more.

Can those of you who voted yes please tell why you did?

I did vote yes, but I thought you were talking about a Poker Player Posse. I've found a group of people surrounding a poker player to be excellent reviewers of cigars. I'm sorry for the confusion....

Review? No.
Get a good idea of general tastes in the cigar? Yes

Enough to help you decide to purchase a whole cigar to review? Definitely.

:tpd:, and I've PPP'd with him too!

I look at them solely as an act of brotherhood. Or, an act of buffet dining. Or both!

But certainly not 'review' worthy.

When people ask me if I've had a cigar and I didn't smoke all of it (i.e. it was part of a PPP), I always qualify the experience.

"Yes, I've had a _______________, but it was part of a PPP, so I can't judge it fully"

PPP is a great way to get a taste of a cigar and to share something special among friends. Certainly very difficult to review. :2

I just couldn't imagine being able to review a cigar from a couple of puffs. Part of a thorough review would be to describe the changes that occur throughout the entire smoke.

I voted yes, but I went more with the angle of tasting a good cigar rather than giving the full monte of a review.

Agree 100% that if you want to sit down with a pen and pad and do a review, PPP wouldn't work.

But, part of the question was also referring to basing purchases on something you tried during a PPP. I can say withouht a doubt stuff I have tried at a PPP I have bought only becasue of the PPP and would probably not have tried it any other way.

The latest example would be a Tatuaje Havana VI. Had a Tat way back and didn't care for it. Had the Havana VI, loved it and now I am back in the Tat loop. Went off topic I know, just a little sidenote.

Maybe I missed the point of the whole question too and I just wasted 39 seconds of anyone's time that had the misfortune of reading this.

I think it is a great way to try some cigars you may never otherwise have a change to smoke, but I don't think you could do a full review from a few puffs.
