Punch or Cut?

I figured this question had to have been asked in the past, but I came up short with the search function.

I personally cut a cigar. I've used a punch once recently. I didn't sense any difference in the punched cigar compared to clipped cigars smoked previously.

Anybody prefer to punch cigars? If so, why?

It has, but no harm no foul my friend. :)

Most people prefer the cut versus the punch, but you will also find those who punch all the time, or those who cut some cigars and then turn around and punch others. The decision is yours really and what you like best, as with most things pertaining to cigars.

There's also a good thread discussing punching over in the Accessories forum: http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=17931

I tend to cut larger rings using the Palio or SAK and I use the VecTor keyring punch on smaller ring guages

I have a punch and a double bladed xicar guillotine. personally I prefer the guillotine. I find smaller gauge cigars can´t be punched because the punch is limited to 2 different sizes on mine. Also, on robustos I´ve noticed that some cigars tend to build up alot of oil on the head(especially PSD4 and Bolis) if they´re punched... they start plugging and the taste gets spoilt. I used to carry the punch on my keyring but that was far too dangerous as 2 curious friends of mine already cut themselves inspecting it.

Conclusion... xicar all the way... flexible, cleaner, more character and less hazardous to those around me.

P.S. guillotines are easier to resharpen if necessary.

I use both . I punched a Padron '64 Principe about 2 weeks ago and then after a little bit , I cut it and it improved greatly . The punch was to restrictive and caused serious harshness . I usually have both with me . But if I could have only one , it would be my Davidoff Zino Guillotine cutter .

I prefer a punch since it tends to damage the end/cap of the cigar less. The caps tend to stay together better so there is no aggravation of the cigar falling apart in your mouth and I find that any stick that would draw tight with a punch will do the same with a cut... I have not had any problems with them plugging during smoking.

A good sharp razor style cutter like the CS cutter (formerly known as Klugs Lil Havana :) ) can get the cut done without any or too much cap damage but it can still end up cutting crooked.

Obviously, for figuardos, I use a cut. And for smaller-ring sizes I also use a cut. But on larger cigars, I will usually opt for a punch. To me, I find it concentrates the smoke in a manner that is more coherent to my taste buds. That’s just how I smoke. I don’t think there is a “right/wrong” way, just different based on how you experience a cigar.

However, I agree with the statement that a punch cut can get clogged with tar. This seems to always happen to me on robustos, which is odd as I would think it would be more common with Churchills and Toros. Usually I just run the punch back in the hole it made and all seems to clear up.

I go back and forth depending on the type. I frequently smoke a 47 by 7" that takes to a punch nicely. Others don't.

I've never been a fan of the punch. I "V" cut some cigars (Usually small RG) and use my Xikar or Palio on other cigars. My Son and Nephew swear by the punch. I've given each of them a Xikar to replace the cheap cutters they had and they still perfer the punch. Maybe I'll have to give it a try.

I prefer the punch. It makes it harder for me to rush the smoke. I have a tendency to get more out of the cigar, with the extra time it takes to smoke this way. But I am also pretty new to serious cigar smoking. A more seasoned smoker would probably not have this problem. In all I would say it is totally up to preference. I like to try it both ways. (gives me a ligitmate excuse to buy two cigars) Just my :2 .

I cut long filler and punch short filler (ie. JLP's.) Punching seems to keep short filler trash out of my mouth better.

I prefer the punch myself and favor robustos and haven't had the problem of any buildup or taste difference because of the punch. I will cut smaller diameter cigars that don't punch effectively, but when I do cut, I do the Dick(man) cut. I find that the punch allows me to enjoy the smoke longer and doesn't inundate the palate, but when I do cut, the "Dick" cut allows the smoke to roll around the palate without becoming overbearing.

It took me a long time to figure out my preferences.

I'm Irish. We punch. My wife's italian. They cut. Hope that helps.;)

Its purely a matter of personal preference. Whether I use a punch or a cutter depends on the cigar and my mood. I do like how a punch tends to maintain the integrity of the construction of the cigar better than a miss cut. Either way, be careful, gentle and swift. :D

Whenever possible I punch. Punching tends to keep the cap from unraveling. I've Never noticed a problem with tar buildup. After I punch I always test the draw, if its too tight Ill cut and that sometimes fixes the draw.

I cut for the most part. A while back I would use my teeth and just puncture the cap that way :) But hey I aint as barbaric now days :)
