I'm actually going at the end of June to Punta Cana too. From what I've read I'm not counting on getting any real cubans. Hopefully someone knows somewhere they have them though.

Theres alot of fakes in the obvious settings....on the beach, gift shops, etc. Ive never seen a legit cigar shop in d.r. but i never honestly went looking for one either......enjoy!

I'm not much help, having never really travelled in South America. My advice would be to do a ton of reading on fakes. There's a wealth of info here, Cigar Aficionado has some, and vitolas.net I think has a bunch of stuff too. Maybe then you can pick out fakes...best of luck!

I was in the D.R. for Thanksgiving last year. There were a couple of places I found at the resort (Casa de Campo) that had real CC's. Of course, there were also plenty of guys walking around with glass top boxes of fake Cohibas.

Do a lot of reading before you go and you may find a reputable shop.

Dude, the DR is in the Caribbean, not South America.

I would suggest not worrying about it. I was just there over new years and didn't find anything but obvious fakes. I would also suggest just taking your own cigars with you. The cigars I found were way over priced.

:tpd:

I forgot to mention this. Cigars in general CC or NC were overpriced. In my hotel one of the gift shops had Opus X's for $40 (Fuente Fuente's IIRC). The duty free shop in the La Romana airport had them for MUCH less, but by the time I got back to the airport my cigar budget was long gone. :ss The shops I found real CC's in weren't too overpriced and if you don't have CC's to bring with you and want to enjoy a couple while you're out of the country spending a couple extra dollars each on a few singles really isn't that big of a deal IMO.

You cannot get authentic cuban's in the DR. The counterfeiting of cuban's, especially Cohiba, is very profitable there. To test this theory, I was there (Punta Cana) this past summer and found a few "cuban" cohiba nub's on the ground. I removed the wrapper, and everything inside was shredded. I mean, it looked like cigarette tobacco! I thought it was pretty amazing. That is one sure sign you are smoking a fake!:tu

Pickup some of the cutom rolled cigars they are not bad, I would not buy anything at the hotels unless your very experienced. The prices are better in States though. You will find Cuban cigars at the duty free once you pass the gates to sit around for your plane. There is a glassed perfume shop that has a small walk in humidor at the end. There were some cuban cigars in the corner (mostly Monte's), do your homework and check prices and cigar labels/box codes.

That's a pretty sweeping statement saying that you can't find a real CC in an entire country.

There are TONS of guys selling fake glass top box faux-hibas on the island. I'm sure the majority of tourists are suckered in by these guys. However, saying you can't get a real CC in a whole country because you found some fake nubs seems to say to me that you may have jumped to a conclusion without having all the facts. No offense, but my experience was different. Of course, as I mentioned I was at a different resort.

You misunderstood, friend. I did not assume that by finding this fake Cuban nub was the sole reason I came to that particular conclusion. I talked to many retailers and manufacturers who told me that they (the DR) do not sell Cubans because there would be no market for them. The FAKE market would virtually drive them out of business, as it were because of the ignorance of tourists.

There is definitely a fake market on the DR. However, I did partake in some CC's while I was there and after examining the bands, tubes, etc. I'm 99.9% sure they were real.

If you are in the part of Punta Cana that we were lucky enough to be in ,cigars, CC or not will be the last thing on your mind. The beaches are fabulous, the drinks are cold, and the area is very "European" if you know what I mean. Seriously, you will have a blast in PC. I did find some real CC's in one shop in town, had to ask he went into the back to get them and they were authentic As someone said the Duty Free at the airport had a small selection and as with most places in Mexico and the Caribbean 99.9% of the cigars are fakes and they are really bad fakes. Enjoy

Here it is, in a nutshell...

If you go ANYWHERE in the world, and you DONT buy your cubans at an LCDH, chances are, the cigars are fake. Evem if you go somewhere where Cubans are legal! I would say 90%, if not more, of the cigars sold anywhere else, including airports, hotels, bars, restaurants, street vendors, cigar shops (yes cigar shos, NOT with an LCDH logo) are fake.. Period.

Plus, even if you do find an LCDH somewhere, the prices are insane! I paid $45.00 for a Cohiba Siglo III that wasnt even good.

Moral of the story, bring your own, know your source, smoke good cigars..

(dam, that was a big-a$$ nut shell!)

To find legitimate CC's while traveling your best bet is to look for a Habanos S.A authorized retailer there should be a sign or you can look on the Habanos website although you may have to e-mail them.

I can't agree with you there.... over 90% is a big number. go to any cigar shop up here in Canada and I would say 90% of stuff sold are REAL.

i guess it is a big #, but i dont think its MUCH lower.. ESPECIALLY in a caribbean island, aka third world country.. But either way, im not sure ANYONE should be buying cigars in Canada.. With all the taxes charged and all...
