Quintessential Cigar for Guests

You're entertaining guests and its after dinner. As an addendum to the feast, you offer the institutional after-dinner spirit. With the drink graciously accepted, you ponder offering your guest a fine cigar. Knowing your guest isn't an aficionado, perhaps only acknowledging he's tried a cigar or two in the past, you dwell on what to offer. You would like to introduce them to fine cigars and impress at the same time, the latter of which can be accomplished by some CS members by merely displaying their collection.

There are plenty of cigars listed on the newbie list, and those are likely good candidates. My motivation for this is not really around what's a good newbie cigar, rather what is your 'go to' cigar to both impress and influence, the joy that is cigar smoking. Very much similar to how one might break out a particular cognac or wine to serve a guest.

So here's the question: In your opinion what is the quintessential cigar to offer a guest?
 
My opinion is to offer something mild but GOOD......if you give up a yardgar, they my wonder why you smoke these things. I always try to offer a great cigar so they may experience the pleasure that i so enjoy.

Inexpensive good mild cigars IMHO
 
Guest cigars, IMO, should be cheap, good and with a nice presentation. I would go with a Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial. They are gorgeous, with a classy band and they're pretty damned good, and they cost you like $4 (they don't have to know that though ;))

I've also found Romeo y Julieta Tubos to be popular with guests because of name recognition, presentation and mildness. They aren't my favorite, but they like 'em, so I give 'em.
 
I would probably offer up a La Aroma de Cuba. They are my favorite smokes so far. They have a nice creamy/spicy taste to it. :tu Plus with them being noobs, they would probably think it is a cuban cigar because of the word Cuba on it. :r

Haha, yep. I've brought friends to the B&M and browsed a while, and more than once I've heard "Dude, these are Cubans over here!" referencing some cigar with "Cuba" or "Cuban" in its name...
 
the milder the better....unless you want a good laugh....then give them an H Upmann Magnum 50 (although it would be quite an expensive laugh).
 
This is definately a precarious situation because you are trying to bring them into the habit and share part of your life with them.

You want to give them something good but you do not want them to choke on it thereby turning them off of this great passion of ours.

Presentation is key so something well made with a classic band like one of the Vintages or that great double band of the PAMs IMHO.

In my limited experience I have found that if you can share a little about the history of the particular stick it really helps build the experience and make it memorable thereby achieving your goal.
 
Macanudo Hampton Court tubos is a good choice for a newbie guest. Nice construction, nice presentation, good mild cigar.

Very true. Good for the non-smoker. However, I wouldn't recommend these if they smoke cigarettes but not cigars. It will turn them off of cigar-smoking in the other direction most likely ("Thank you for the smooth cigar, it's very nice...but quick question: are they supposed to taste like anything?")

There is something to be said about that. Smoking a different cigar than my guest always seems to make me feel as if I picked the better stick - or in the case of Old Sailor, gave the guest a crap stick. :D
