Quintessential Cigar for Guests

I've had good luck with giving no regular smoking guests AF 858 Naturals, Punch EMS or Maduro, H. Upmann vintage Cameroons or Perdomo Champagnes.

:tpd: Great presentation, easy to smoke, tasty & mild. The RP Connecticut would be a good choice as well.

I also wouldn't hesitate to offer a flavored cigar, if that would suit their tastes. I know, I know... :sl But, something not too overwhelming or nauseous. Maybe a Java or a Clean Robusto, maybe an Acid Blondie--short enough that they don't have to feel bad if they don't finish.

But my guests are probably different than yours.. :D

It's interesting because if we are talking scotch or top shelf liquor I give them what I am drinking yet when it comes to cigars I tend to try to fit their experience/tastes better. Part of that is cost even a 100+$ bottle of scotch one pour is only a few dollars where a Padron 40th is 25$. They also usually finish the scotch even if the don't appreciate it and it kills me to watch a fine cigar ground out into the ashtray after an inch and wasted. Also it is rare that someone is going to get ill on a scotch or cognac but a JDN could very well make them green around the gills. I gave a buddy a Perdomo Signature Cameroon not a smoke I would consider particularly strong but he hotboxed it as he was a bit inebriated and loving the taste and it made him quite ill. So to answer your question I don't think there is a perfect guest cigar. I have had very good luck with the Perdomo Slow Aged 826 naturals. Reasonably priced accessible flavors for most relatively new smokers. I enjoy them and may even forgo something I would enjoy more for the social aspect of sharing a cigar that my guest would enjoy. I actually often do this with wine. Rather than going with my preferred wine or "best" wine even as a pairing I will go with what is best IMO for my guest and enjoy it with them.

Chisel.

I hate guests.

The few guests that visit (wife's family mostly) are not the least bit interested in smoking cigars. When we are outside on the deck and I light up (being courtious and sitting downwind) I get the oh no he's smoking a cigar look. If they don't like it they can leave whenever they want, the sooner the better.

Most of our guests are cigarrette smokers and can create a smoke cloud really fast. For the couple of times someone has taken on the offer, I hand out a Padron Delicia, Monetsino or A Fuente Special (nice short filler gar. the name is what makes it ok)

I think presentation (band) has a lot to do with pleasing non-regular smokers almost as much as the cigar itself.

La Aroma de Cuba (as was mentioned before) PC's and Coronas
Punch Grand Cru
H Upmann Vintage Cameroon
Gran Habanos Corojo#5

These smokes come to mind because they are presented nicely, are pretty darn good, and the price is just right. So if someone doesn't feel like finishing you won't be upset.

For guests I really don't know to well or might be visiting a neighbor I might offer up just about any loose stick I have laying around the humi. My father-in-law loves Ashton's since that was the one I started him on. And for the next person that looks in the humi and says the darker the stronger. They will be getting a Opus or LG so I can slowly end that myth my own way :ss

Monte #4, or if it's someone who isn't likely to finish the stick, anything cheap that I happen to have in the humi.

It would really depend on the guest. If its a nonsmoker then it would be an Avo, if its a smoker we pull out the big guns.

Tell them they can pick and let them know of your willingness to provide guidance. And remember just because it's most often a good stick, they could get a plugged one or worse, so let them know they can try a second one if need be.

for guest that dont know much about cigars ill hand out the RyJ resevera real, i hate them but everyone elce likes them. but if its someone i know that will actually enjoy and apperciate the cigar ill offer them something a little more bold like the camacho 10th anniversery.

I agree with the Hampton Court Macanudos. I like to push the Maduros as I feel they offer some flavor in a mild smoke. I usually keep a box of Madoro Hyde Parks as well as an assortment of Hamton Court tubes.

Other cigars that have gone over well are 5 Vegas Classic and Gold, Onyx Reserve, Monte White and almost anything RyJ.

I've only had one cigar go over not so well, it was a La Gloria Cubana. Poor guy turned green...
