Man O' Gar
I'm hoping you Gorillas can point me toward some new sticks to try based on my likes/dislikes. I am not refined enough to pick out the different flavors I like, but I do have some opinions so far:

Hoyo de Monterey Excalibur - one of my favorites so far, both the regular and 1066.
Coronado by La Flor - another favorite so far.
Punch Rare Corojo - another favorite so far.
Saint Luis Rey, both the Serie G and regular maduro - I like these a lot.
Padron 3000 - Liked it.
Gurkha (yeah, I know, I know) - Ancient Warrior and another I didn't take note of which it was. A common one, with the red/orange band and knife-wielding moustached guy on it. I enjoyed these.
Arturo Fuente 858 maduro, and double Chateau - Enjoyed them. Not super memorable, but definitely a go-to for me.
Pepin black label - I like these. A little peppery, but still enjoy them quite a bit.
Oliva G - good enough, not super memorable but still liked it.
Partagas black - a little too strong for me.
Ashton VSG - Tried it based on rave reviews. I did like some of the more subtle flavors I got in my nose, but the initial punch-in-the-mouth was too strong for me.
Padilla 68 - like the VSG, a little too strong for me.
Rocky Patel 1999 Connecticut - had it after an Oliva G and couldn't taste it at all.

With that said, I'll take any advice on some new cigars to try.

Thanks in advance,
Pete

You may not like this answer but try them all. It's the only way to know what you like. :ss

Buy more of the ones you know you like and start to experiement with new cigars. If you like a certain cigar try some others in the line or brand. If you don't like a particular cigar spike it and pick up one you know you will enjoy. Don't try to force down an entire cigar you don't like. It kinda looks like your taste is all over the place, like mine. It's a fun ride that lasts a looooong time. :z

I do like that answer. I feel what you're saying, and that's what I've been doing so far. But paying California B&M prices for single VSG's and Padilla 68's just to try them out has quickly exceeded my spending cash.

Mind you, I'm never going to say, "so-and-so told me this would be a good smoke, and I didn't like it". That's definitely not my style! Unless someone tells me to try a Cremosa :D

Keep you eyes on the Herf thread and try to make one of the BABOTL herfs. :tu We herf fairly regularly and would love to bomb, I mean meet you!:ss

Sounds like you have a wide range of likes/dislikes, so your gonna have to try out quite a few different brands and just see. Something I did when I first started smoking was to try different cigars with tobacco from certain regions. I would buy a variety of Dominican cigars, then honduran, then nicaraguan. Try wrappers from different areas too, like cameroon, corojo, criollo, costa rican, and conneticut to name a few. Make some notes about different regions tobaccos that you like and find something that meets the criteria. Personally I found my niche with the Padilla 1932.

Another thing is, your taste will change. Some will become old favorites and some will go by the wayside. You will get favorites for special occasions.
I have a sampler for someone who never PMed me that's yours if you get to me first.

Keep a log.

I bought a little notebook when I first started and made notes of what the cigar was, size, wrapper, strength, flavor, construction and my overall impression. I also scotch taped a band to the top of each page. I bought a lot of samplers from the various mail order houses and had a lot of fun sorting out what I did and did not like. I still add to it when I try out a new stick and keep it at my fingertips when perusing C-Bid.
Enjoy!

Try this.... I was in the same place as you earlier this year. So, I took all the smokes I liked, looked up the "professional" reviews. I noticed 3 flavors that seem to pop on most of the sticks, for me chocolate, vanilla, and coffee. So, I looked in reviews for new sticks with those profiles. So that is one method that may work.

Based on your top 3, I also love the Hoyo and Punch Rare Corojo.... So if our palettes are similiar, you may like a cameroon wrapped stick. You will find the H. Uppman Vintace Cameroon and the Punch Royal Coronation in the mild to medium range, affordable, and flavor without a lot of bite. I would also recommend the Punch Grand Puro as an alternate to the first two.

PS the Gurkha sounds like the Master Select of wich there are several variations.

That was an awsome gesture, there are some tasty cigars in that sampler.

Nice job, NCRadioMan..... for showing the new guy a little jungle love.
