Here is my situation. I am fairly new to smoking cigars on a regular basis. I normally buy an assortment (10 at a time) of cigars so that I can acquire a taste for what I like.

However, I tend to buy the more expensisve cigars since I am buying singles. I would love to find a few go to sticks that are somehwat affordable so that I can start purchasing boxes.....around $100-$150 a box. The PAM's are great, but I can't really start buying boxes that are that expensive.

Is the the top25 sub $6 list a good place to start? What other "must trys" do you recommend?

This hobby is like wine, once you taste the good stuff it's hard to look back.

my suggestion is to do what i do, just buy a bunch of 5 packs. I find that I can't figure out if I like a cigar by only trying one.

In my cart right now are 8 5 packs at Cigars international.

The ones I already love:
5 pack of camacho corojo toro,
5 of Perdermo lot 23 toro
5 of torano 1916 robusto
5 5 vegas gold toro

Ones I have had limited/no experience with and/or want to try
5 of h upmann churchill
5 of joya de nicaragua antano 1970 consul
5 of the edge by rocky toro (Corojo)
5 of the oliva G cameroon toro
(thanks to the gorilla's here for recommending them)

Now I will be getting 40 cigars, half of which i know I love, half of which I will experiment with! IT worked for me last time.

If I find I really really like em, and Ihave the money, I buy em by the box.

I was in the same boat as you like 3 weeks ago, (funny how fast things can change) where I only bought a few choice sticks. doing this has really broadened the horizons! and has been a lot cheaper.

I used to just buy boxes of a few sticks. Now I try to even it out like this so I am forced to try new stuff.

It also has kept me off the "slope" that so many talk about. I buy all this stuff, and will be occupied in trying new stuff and smoking my favorites that i don't have the feeling i need to buy more. Than once my humidor gets low, I repeat!

However, when my state tax returns come, a box of vsg's are staring me in the face..muahha (maybe i haven't avoided that slope?)

Either way, my must try's are the following (all within that 6 and below range):

Camacho corojo> full
Camacho Coyolar>full
Don Pepin Black> Ful <---just found out about this beauty about 2 weeks ago due to my little strategy!
Perdomo lot 23 >medium
Torano 1916 cameroon> mild-medium
5 vegas gold > mild

**and I forgot, whenever I buy cigars, and I only have one left, I don't smoke it until I get more. Just for reference to know what I have and haven't smoked. It's a good memory jogger! And if i don't like em, which has been the case with a few, I keep one of em anyways, in case i run into someone who does!

Not to deviate from my original post, but how do you determine what size cigar to buy? Is it whatever feels comforatable or does the blend of the cigar determine which size to buy? I see alot of reviews/ratings for a particular size and wonder how different the same cigar would taste in a different size.

Thanks for the links I will check those out tonight! Definitley will try some of the suggestions from TheEconomist. Glad to hear there are others that use to be in the same boat.

If you like the PAM, you might as well go ahead and get a box of the regular line padrons. You can get the 2000s for about 80 or less a box and are great smokes. They're my favorites, and the favorite of quite a few on here.

:tpd:

you can even get some balicosos or londres for even cheaper than that & they have a VERY similar flavor profile

Size is a factor in a smoke just like everything else. I have found myself switch from larger to smaller RG since I started smoking. I tend to think that the smaller RG packs a little more of a punch. I like a corona or even a PC (partly because of the flavor and partly because of time). However, a good churchill or toro is great when I have the time. Pretty much it boils down to personal preference.
