Retro-haling

My friend talks about it all the time where your not really inhaling the cigar but you are still able to blow the smoke out of your nose. Apparently he says it enhances the flavors of the cigar. I have done it and I haven't notice any difference either way. What do you guys think??

I don't mean this in a sarcastic way, but if this thread is a joke it's really not that funny and it's taking up space.:tu

Actually, if you're serious...your friend knows what he's talking about. You should try it, too.

I snork every single draw. This is my method:

Draw into the mouth
immediately exhale via nose vigorously (short burst)
blow a small amount from the mouth
blow final amount through nose.

rinse, repeat on every draw.

I didn't mean to offend anyone or try to ask a stupid question I am fairly new to cigar smoking (a year) and this is the first I heard about it. I have tried like I posted earlier and I didn't seem to notice any differences. My apologies.

Hadn't tried this method...just did it...wow.... that's awesome, I did the draw in, exhale 70% through mouth the rest through the nose, your method burns less.

Don't appologize, there are some that...don't understand all the time at first it's all good, hell I learned something because you asked, and I thank you for that.

Another vote for: Mandatory. The only way to experience every nuance. It helps to be reflexive though, not forced. If you're focusing too heavily on horking out your nose, you'll miss the tinge of 7-year aged madagascar vanilla. When people do the lip-smacking thing that is actually causing some smoke to be expelled up via the palate. Whatever technique you arrive at, it's a good thing.

I beleive the Doc at Stogie Fresh coined the phrase "Retro-Haling". I don't do it with every draw, but I will "retro-hale" often with every cigar I smoke. You can really pick up different flavors and especially spicy notes (if the cigar has any). Not every one can do it, it does take a little practice and it may be better to try with a more mild stogie at first.
Good topic!!

I didn't give 'retro-hailing' a try until a few months ago. Assuming that you can't do it wrong (if the smoke comes out your nose you did it right) there are many cigars, probably over 1/2, that feel like a solid presence in my sinuses that is truly unpleasant. Very similar to the sensation I remember feeling in my throat from trying to inhale a cigarrette when I was a kid.
But, with the ones that don't have that effect (most CC's don't have it) it can add a whole other dimension to the flavor/aroma.
