Review: Plascencia Reserva Organica

borndead1

Waiting for the Nub 180!
Size: Robusto
Draw: perfect
Burn: 2 small touch ups
Age: about 7 months in humi, cello removed

I won a box of these for way under retail on the FSS auction site. They are described as mild, and I've read alot of complaints that they have no flavor, but I must disagree. To me they are definitely medium bodied and very flavorful. I've smoked 5 or 6 of them and flavor/draw/construction have all been consistent and top notch.

First 1/3 is a mostly tobacco flavor with a few bits of spice. Pretty one dimensional, but it is a VERY nice flavor.
Second 1/3 is more of the same with some sweetness to compliment the tobacco flavor. 1 small touch up to the burn at about the halfway point.
Final 1/3 gets VERY interesting. The sweetness intensifies a bit, and the flavor develops into an almost Maduro flavor. Another small touch up to the burn at about 2". I nubbed this thing probably lower than any cigar I've smoked recently.
One thing to note is that although the PRO is a Nicaraguan puro, it doesn't have that distinctly "Nicaraguan flavor", to me anyway.

I love these cigars. Once I pay my credit card back down a little bit (damn c bid), I am buying another box for sure. :ss

I agree with borndead1 that the robusto from the original line is more than ok, although a little too mild for me!

But, I just suffered through a corona from the Edicion Limitada 2001 line and that was a plain boring and very bland cigar. No spice or wood, no dynamics, just plain tobacco taste all the way. Taking their price into consideration (over $6 at Famous), this cigar is a joke!

Nice review! I've seen these in the Famous Catalog but wasn't sure about them. Sounds like something I will need to check out. Thanks!

UPDATE:

I am smoking another one of these from this same box, making them about 1.5 yrs old, and they just keep getting better. They used to have a sort of musty "off" taste in the pre-light draw; that has disappeared. Spice has also kicked up a notch, and the finish has a soft fruity flavor that I don't remember the last time I smoked one. I'm down to my last box and a half of these, think it's about time to restock.

Also, the "Nesticos", a small 4 X 36 version of the PRO, are a fantastic little firecracker of a smoke. I thought they would be made with the scraps from the larger cigars, but not so. They are long filler and slooooowwwwww burning (around 45 min). Same basic flavor profile but a bit more spice and a little more "bite". They sometimes come up in multi-box lots on the Famous auction site.

what is the fss auction site?

I think you gave a very fair review.

I have smoked a box of the EL 2001 Belicosco. I thought they were a very well made mild smoke. Its a nice smoke. Last summer I would fire one mid afternoon in the back yard in the hammy.

Its a very mild smoke that really goes well with iced coffee on a hot mid summer afternoon.

I think Nestor Plascencia is a very good cigar maker and look forward to trying his smokes

Good review. Based on the label, I thought these would be a foul Drew Estate-like flavored stick. I was gifted one, and was pleasantly surprised! Very good, though I would call them medium-bodied as well.

Nice review, and I totally concur, the robusto is nice and really changes through the smoke. I haven't tried the 2001 Reserve line, but the corona is also really tasty, though definitely more of a mild smoke. I saw a review on these recently that compared the taste of these to Marlboro cigarettes. Does anybody else think so? (I haven't smoked a Marlboro, or any cigarette for about 6 years now, so can't really agree/disagree)

I have almost bought these many times in the last few years. Now I will have to buy some. I have enjoyed every Placencia cigar I have tried, except the Nestor line, which is, I think, like driving a Dino - made in the same place as a Ferrari, but without all the power and other bennies.
