Romeo Y Julieta Reserve Maduro

This is my first review guys, so take it easy please!

A friend at work gifted me one a churchill Reserve Maduro. After a slightly satisfying victory for my favorite football team, and a nice home cooked meal, I decided to light it up.

The construction was pretty good, with a slight imperfection where there was a bulge/vein in the wrapper leaf, and it was a tad bit lose looking. The smell was good, and fairly strong and there was definitely a sweet aroma coming off of it.

The toast and the light went well, and the draw was good. The first third had a pronounced burnt toast flavor, with occasional nutty flavor. The finish was somewhat harsh and dry.

As I continued into the second third, I began to taste a faint hint of coffee flavor, and a slight dark chocolate kind of flavor. The finish mellowed out, and it became a pretty enjoyable smoke. The burnt toast flavor continued throughout this third, albeit not as strong.

The last third was a fairly dramatic switch, as the tar buildup started to affect the taste. The finish was still pretty mellow as compared to the first third, and the burnt toast flavor continued to subside. The coffee and dark chocolate flavors that I enjoyed so much were either gone, or overpowered by the tar and nearing the finish, I put it down.

Overall a fairly enjoyable smoke. It was my first Churchill, so I do not know if there are tips to reducing the amount of tar buildup when you begin to reach the end.

Thanks for the review. RyJ's are definetly one of my fav's, however I can not remember whether or not I've smokes a Reserve Maduro. I think that after reading your post I will have to go out and get some to try.

I enjoy this smoke too. Let me guess, you used a punch instead of a guillotine cutter. A drawback I find in using a punch is that it allows the tar to accumulate in the tip easier. Try a guillotine cutter next time but make sure to not lop off too much of the cap or you will unravel the stick. Nice review though, thank you.

Very nice review. Sometimes you can cut just past the tar build up, and the cigar will be fine after that. Just something to try next time it happens.

Actually I did use a guillotine cut on it. I wonder if maybe I smoked it too hard/quick?

I noticed that after opening the pics, feel a little dumb at this point. Perhaps you did smoke it too quickly, I'll have to look this one up. Stillm nice review and thanks for it.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I wish I would have thought of cutting it again, that might have worked out great. The flavors were still very nice, just that they were getting overpowered.

I will definitely keep it in mind for next time though!

You may try a slightly smaller size next time as well. I find a lot of times with churchills I only smoke them halfway or 2/3 before they get nasty.

I would second this advice.

I keep plenty of the R&Y RM #4 (5x44) around as my stick of choice while grilling. They go great with a pint of Guiness!
