RP Vintage 92 -- 90's Bratty Lil' Bro

Evolving Lead Gorilla
A couple of weeks back I got a 5'er of these from Cbid and have been eager to try them ever since. I dearly love the RP Vin. 90's and I was hoping for much of the same here with the Vin. 92.

As I expected this stick was near flawless in most every way. The wrapper, as you can see from the pics, did have a couple of minor cracks, but other than this it was lush looking, smelling and all around inviting.

Cut, burn, ash were all there in true RP fashion -- which means they were great. It was a beautiful spring day here in Indiana, with a good breeze in the air; yet the Vin. 92 held up like a champ. As with the Vin. 90 the 92 put out a ton of heavy white smoke (which I just love).

The reason I dubbed this cigar the "bratty lil' bro" was because of it's harsher flavor over that of the Vin. 90. Lacking was the customary RP creamy flavor signature. Rather I found the Vin. 92 to be a bit more harsh straight through. This harshness tended to cover over any discernible flavors that were present. As I expected, there was the evidence of chocolate, but with the harshness, it was more like scorched chocolate. There were some other noticeable flavors about as well: coffee, butter, nut. But again, they were all over ridden by the all around harshness of the cigar.

I suspect this may mellow out if I were to let them rest for a while; which I intend to do as this isn't a cigar I plan to give up on just yet. I powered through, not that it was too difficult to do -- it is a RP after all and other than this one issue was quite redeemable. Overall I'd rate the Vin. 92 at a 6.5 / 10.

I hope with some age this will improve to 8 or better.

Thanks for the review.

I've smoked a lot of 92s and would never describe them as harsh, so maybe this one needs a little more sleepy time. I do think they are richer than the 90s and I notice hints of cherry along with the chocolate you described. All in all, I prefer the 92s and my favorite is the torp.

I agree. I always found the 90's to be a little bolder and the 92's a little creamier. You could have just got a young batch.

I like the 92 better than the 90 - have never noted harshness in the 92. I have some of each and may have to do a taste test this weekend since I haven't smoked either in a while. Nice Review!

So bizarre, I'm just the opposite of the three of you...give me a 90 over the 92 (at this point anyway)...ahh, the beauty of cigars.

I also prefer the '92s. They seem to me to have just a little bit of sweetness that I associate with cubans. The '90s are much more coffee and cocoa IMO.

Put me down for the Vintage 90 Camp.
I enjoy them much more than the 92's.
Creamy dark chocolate & coffee, perfect with a Cabernet or Zinfandel.
The 92's always seem to taste more cedary & sharp.

alright, i'm not alone...i was beginning to wonder

Even though the 90 is my favorite smoke, I decided to bring the "bratty lil' bro" out last night to accompany me. He didn't behave and I had to burn him down to the nub. Damn shame. I'm looking forward to our next time together.

I prefer the 92s over the 90s, but I think that is because I prefer a sweeter smoke over one with more a pepper profile.

That's interesting. I don't like a pepper profile at all myself but I don't get a bit of pepper from the 90. I find it to be the sweeter of the two. Guess thats what makes the world go round, huh.

:tpd: I totally agree. I find just the opposite to be true. Ahh, cigars.
