Rush speaks on the proposed cigar tax increase

$10.00 a stick in taxes...yikes. However, I think that's pretty close to what we pay here (and why I order all my cigars from the states). To put it in perspective, I paid around 25.00 for a La Flor Dominica chisel. That's pretty standard price here. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you guys.

Rush's comparison to the yacht industry is dead on. The 1990 luxury tax in the budget deal put them out of business and thousands of people out of work. For some reason the goobs in Washington keep thinking when they tax the crap out of something consumer behavior won't change. Of course, just the opposite happens. Hopefully, this piece of crap legislation won't get approved, much like the rest of the goof ball stuff this Congress has come up with.

I've already emailed my congressmen. The current leadership in both the house and senate are socialists, just like stalin, lenin and all the other Big Brothers past and present - they know whats best for us....."A new Direction" was how it was put by ole Nancy Pelosie.....gotta admit she does keep her promises. Tobacco, free speech and ammo sales today mandated religion and all the other freedoms down the road.

I was just talking to my wife about this...I knew Rush would have something to say about it! Did he talk to any callers about it?

Well, I just shot off some emails to my congressman and my senators about this issue.

Maybe it will do some good.

I read this transcript earlier today, and the only thing I don't like is that the end message of his rant is not about the cigar tax hike, but rather liberal tax hikes in general. Sorry, but this is not the way to defeat this proposal.

Plus, from what I understand (and I have NOT confirmed this) the original idea for raising these additional funds came from Senator Gordon Smith, Oregon Republican.

So like I said in the other thread, we should refrain from wasting time with partisan bickering and focus on stopping this tax.

This proposed tax is horrendous, but lets not forget that anti-smoking bills in general get plenty of support from both sides of the aisle. As do bills which allow the government to look into my credit card statements, listen to my phone calls, and dictate what I can and cannot do in my leisure time (Online Poker Ban for example). IMO, nobody in DC seem to be in any hurry to stop the erosion of our basic rights as Americans...:sb

Sorry, carry on...

I could not possibly agree more.

A while back a proposal came from Orrin Hatch to make it illegal to ship tobacco through the mail. That was stopped by emails, phone calls and the tobacco lobby.

Democrats, Republicans, Liberals, Conservatives, it makes little difference. Tobacco is an easy target because of all the Americans, regardless of political philosophy, who oppose tobacco smoking of any kind. They want us all to march to their drummer.

If we are to worry about the health of our children, it would seem that we should be facing the bigger threat: automobiles. Besides polluting our air (far more than tobacco does) irresponsible drivers cause a lot of death and disability to our kids. But nobody ever talks about that because it is hardly popular.

By the way, I have heard that phone calls to our Senators do much more good than emails and they only take a few minutes. I did my part.

Stamp Act of 2007. Taxation without representation, because congress these days sure don't represent me of 95% of America.

I wish we had the vigor of our fathers.

Maybe we should burn all cigars in one giant bonfire in protest. jk

see i though the gov't was to better our economy, help support capitalism. apparently i was wrong. they continue to chip away at a fair market society acting more like a monopoly than a group of public appointed represenatitves.

maybe we should have a dc herf on capital hill, that would be very cool.

I think comparing any member of our Congress Stalin (who by the way murdered more men, women and children then did Hitler) is going a bit far. Maybe someone like Chavez would be a bit closer :tu
