There was an article in the business section today how San Diego wants to charge tobacco retailers licensing fees. How this will prevent underage smoking and all that :BS
As usual, Charlie from Liberty Tobacco was in there defending smokers everywhere.
 
I keep up on the anti-smoking legislation quite well, at least here in Illinois - and almost every reason that the politicians provide for a new tax or smoking ban is utter b@$!$#@t. There is almost no way that any sort of "licensing fee" (read:tax) will stop underage smoking in any manner. Its just another way for the politicians to line their pockets while demonizing the evil tobacco leaf. Tobacco taxes, licensing fees, etc around here are ridiculous - and the more it is restricted, the less money the city/state will make in tobacco tax, and they will need to raise taxes elsewhere to compensate.
 
Its a beautiful city with great weather and terrific beaches, of course it has to have a dark side : its in California, and this sort of legislation never seems to reflect the will of the people actually living here or at least no one I've ever met. Not that that stops them from passing this stuff anyways.
