should I wipe the humi with distilled water ?

mhsrunner-
My local cigar shop told me to fill up the humidifier, put the humidifier and a glass of solution. Then wait to until the humidity level reaches about 65-70 degrees. The put the cigars in.

If you want to take the guesswork out, buy a few boveda seasoning packets and leave the lid shut for a week with the packets in, and wallah!!! you have a seasoned humidor.

My hygrometer is showing 75/80 degrees in the humidor is that it properly seasoned now?

75/80? Is that 75 degrees Fahrenheit, 80% humidity? You have too much humidity in there. How long has it been that way? Are you using just regular distilled water in a bowl to do the seasoning?

Sorry I meant humidity. I'm using an egg cup full of distilled water to the do the seasoning.

Just putting the distilled water in the container will easily bump up the RH. If it's been that high for a while (half a day or longer), then it's probably good to go.

Replace the cup of water with some beads (about 1/2 of them clear) or if you're using the PG solution, you should probably leave it out for a bit. The beads will soak up the extra humidity, the PG solution I don't think will, so you'll want the RH to drop a bit.

But go ahead and add some sticks. They should absorb some of the humidity, causing it to drop, and once you see it starting to drop, add the PG solution if that's what you're using.

Sounds like it should be good to go!

Thanks for the reply. The RH is 100 today:mad: I have taken the egg cup of solution out and put the beads in. Should I take the Humidifier out?

When seasoning a new humi, never use PG solution. Simply a shallow dish or shot glass of distilled water will do and the humidifying element charged with distilled water. And yes, calibrate your hygrometer (preferably digital) via the salt test or boveda calibration pack.

Once the humi reads >70%RH and holds steady, the wood has absorbed all the humidity it can. It is now safe to introduce your cigars and the beads. Since you have beads (65% or 70%), there is no need for PG solution. The beads will actively regulate the RH inside the humi for you. One thing to remember, the beads act very slowly so it could take upto 1 week before you get accurate/stable readings.

If you feel your hygrometer is accurately calibrated, then yes, taking out the humidifying element might help. Are you beads only as your main source of humidification? If not, then take out whatever the main humidifying element is and leave the beads in to see what the RH levels out to.

avid,

why do you say to never use the pg solution when seaoning a humidor? I heard the opposite, did the opposite, and have nothing but 3 perfectly balanced humidors.

Quite frankly it's not necessary when distilled water does the trick just fine. The point of seasoning a new humidor is to have the wood absord as much humidity in the shortest amount of time, not regulate it.

If you use too much water it can cause the spanish cedar liner to warp or grow mold. If you don't use something that is lint free, you can leave deposit/residue on the wood, which is also not good.

Remember - use the water sparingly, keep the wood clean and above all, don't be in too much of a hurry.

Patience is key. I have set up too many humidors in my time - I now just put a small saucer of distilled water inside and wait until it settles in. It takes a lot longer in the winter than it does in the summer.

I agree. Take the time to season the humi.

Thing seem to be going from bad to worse- I managed to still some distilled water in the humidor:mad:

Not the end of the world. I've done that before. Just soak up any excess with a paper towel. Check the RH tomorrow and if it's high, leave the lid open for a day or two and then start over.

I think I'm going to let it season for a little while longer. I have been so excited about getting the humidor, I don't really think I have given it long enough. Just hope I have not messed thing up to much:cb

Ewan,

Relax. I remember when my first glass top came all shiny and new in a box and I couldn't stop staring at it like it was a newborn baby. Patience is not a strong point for me, so I was looking for the quick way out.

I steamed a glass of water/pg solution, wiped every surface inside with a relatively moist tshirt and asked advice here and listened to whatever i wanted to hear and sounded good.

In 2 days, I was adding sticks and had the thing filled up in a few days.

My gut feeling is that unless you are really soaking down your humi, it will be fine once you let it get around 70 for a good period of time, like a few hours.

leave the top open for your spill and it will be fine once the wood isn't soaked.

if this doesn't work and your humi gets warped, pm me and you have my word that another will be on its way to your house, already seasoned and with cigars.

I hope by "Humidifier" you meant "beads" in the second sentence. Otherwise it appears you may be using beads _and_ some other humidifier? Whatever you do, just use one source of humidity. Use only beads.

As others have said above, let it sit for a few hours cracked open to let the extra humidity escape.

What hygrometer are you using? Hopefully its digital.

Thanks for all the replies:tu

I have lest the humidor open for about an hour and the humidity from about 70 to 62 quite quickly.

I will be ordering a Western Caliber III Digital Hygrometer this friday.

When I put the beads in the humidor, I took the Humidifier out. It's just got the beads in there.

Sounds good. You can probably go ahead and shove some sticks in there now. It'll fluctuate at the beginning quite a bit, but should settle down in a week or two.
