Smoking Ban in Nevada?!

This is really lame.

Nevada is America's smoking section. Catering to every vice available is part of our appealing charm. If they start messing with that than we're just going to be Utah.

D. Generate, They are not serious about that right???

Non-smokers suck a-s! Plain and simple. They want to take away our guns, our choice of religion, our valuable constitutional freedoms, just because they have freakin' asthma! Get a grip and get a life! And leave us the hell alone! :sb

Sorry for the rant. Been a long day! Fu-k 'em! Better vote that crap out!

Unfortunately there are people that are serious about trying to ban it everywhere. It will be up for a vote next year and I'm optimistic that the people here will vote to keep smoking legal just about everywhere. There were two petitions going around, one that sucked by the anti-smoking nazis and one by the gaming industy that would pretty much keep everything the same.

I have a feeling this will get shot down, but I'd feel a lot better if it hadn't even made it to the ballot. :sb

Be careful New Hampshire's state motto is "Live Free or Die" and there are very few laws hindering citizen rights. No helmet laws, cell phone, adult seat belt, etc. and we never taught that the smoking bans would stick here.

Yet the smoke nazis managed to get some restrictions passed on restaurants and bar areas. Weak compared to most states, but now there trying to get more restrictions passed.

It's getting to be nuts and going way overboard in some states.

One thing I noticed when I was in a Casino in Lake Tahoe is you could stand next to someone smoking and not smell the smoke. Air circulation must be awesome. So what are they complaining about?

Scares me because if Nevada goes all will follow.

I think part of the problem here is that there is a very vocal minority speaking for the majority. Most people I talk to aren't in favor of the total bans on smoking. We as the majority need to excercise our power by signing petitions, voteing, mail our reps, whatever it takes.

Remember: The squeeky wheel gets the grease...

I know, pretty soon there's not going to be legalized prostitution and gambling anywhere else either...

I've always been impressed with the ventilation everywhere in Nevada. I don't like cigarette smoke but most places have it set up so that you never feel like your being smoked out. Since smoking is pretty much expected everywhere, they have addressed it by providing great ventilation and filtration. It's a good solution, much better than just banning it.

Hopefully the restaurant and nightclub lobbyists don't allow it to happen D. I know that the casino closest to my home allows cigarettes and pipes but won't let me smoke a stogie, so now I am going another 1/2 hour to a different casino. F 'em all....

I doubt it'll happen. Las Vegas generates too much revenue and the casinos would lose too much money. (and trust me, money drives the political system)

But then again, thats just my opinion LOL

I hope you're right. I thought the same thing with Florida's hospitality industry but it passed anyway.

Yeah but in Florida I don't think half the people even knew what they were voting on....if Nevada passes it....the casinos will really start sucking....they'll probably put in an exemption for casinos...this sucks.

The casinos here are owned by Native American Tribes so, you can smoke in them here as well. Plus private clubs, I joined the American Legion and Moose Clubs.

Man I hope this isn't passed, for your sake and ours. They are starting that sh*t here. Lawrence is now a non-smoking town. Westport (MO) is now non-smoking. Two of the largest places to go to bars around here are now Non-smoking WTF over?

Well I sent a state senator an email way back when and I just got a reply.

Dear Mr. Generate:

Thank you for sharing your views regarding current anti-smoking efforts.  As you are aware, two initiative petitions addressing the use of smoking tobacco were circulated throughout the state and submitted to Nevada Secretary of State Dean Heller.  Secretary of State Heller deemed both petitions valid and presented them to the Nevada Assembly on February 7, 2005.  Copies of the petition language may be viewed on the Nevada Legislature’s website at www.leg.state.nv.us.

On March 9, 2005, the Assembly Committee on Judiciary considered both initiative petitions and decided not to take action on either one.  Some parties voiced concern that Initiative Petition 1 was too restrictive while others felt that Initiative Petition 2 did not go far enough.  The Nevada Constitution provides that if an initiative petition is rejected or is not acted upon by the Legislature within 40 days from the day it is received, the Secretary of State must submit the initiative question to the voters for approval or disapproval at the next general election.  Since the Assembly Judiciary Committee chose not to act on the petitions, both will automatically be placed on the ballot for the 2006 General Election.  The decision now rests with the voters.

Another anti-smoking measure, Assembly Bill 118, passed the Assembly last week and was referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary on April 15.  This measure would prohibit smoking in video arcades and revise the provisions governing smoking in child care facilities.  While I have not yet had an opportunity to review the bill, I am supportive of efforts to protect children and youth from the dangers of secondhand smoke in child care facilities and other areas frequented by children.

As a concerned citizen, you may wish to monitor the Legislature’s website for further developments on this issue.  The Nevada Legislature’s website (www.state.nv.us) contains detailed information on all introduced legislation, including scheduled hearing dates, that is updated daily.

Again, I appreciate your thoughts and will keep your comments in mind should A.B. 118 or other legislation that restricts smoking be considered by the full Senate.

Respectfully,

Randolph J. Townsend

Nevada State Senator

So basically they all dodged actually dealing with it and any uncomfortable situations that might arise that way.

Now it will go to a general vote and we'll see what Nevadans do. I particularly like how the anti-smoking forces are trying to make it sound like it's about preventing smoking in child care centers. Yeah.... right.

Please do not take this personal my good BOTL

Don't worry.... at least they still have gambling and prostitution

Being a Conservative CHRISTian I have always thought of Nevada as one of the most bizarre states in the union because of Gambling and Prostitution... it would only seem as normally screwed up as this country has become to outlaw smoking while the other two are legal.

Like they say... "Only in America"

CYA disclaimer...

Rod Romo loves his country, has served it and is still willing to again anytime and thinks there is no better.

[/soapbox]

I understand not being allowed to smoke in a restraunt. Personally, I HATE the smell of cigarette smoke when I am eating, and it's not so big of a deal to wait until I leave an establishment before lighting up. However, I have completely stopped going to bars now, as I can't even begin to understand how someone can tell smokers they can't light up in a drinking establishment.

Booze and smokes are both unhealthy vices that go hand-in-hand!! :c

Like chocolate and peanut butter!!! :p

The fun police are really cracking down on this country. We're quickly becoming a nanny state. Next they will be telling us how to wipe our a#s's properly.

The feelgooders only want to outlaw anything that inconveniences THEM!!!

They don't have any real values or any real concern for others, they only have self interest in mind. So although it may seem strange to you as a Christian, smoking, gambling and prostitution are all separate issues. In their mind, smoking may bother someone at a restaurant while gambling and prostitution are lifestyle choices.

I don't like smoking in restaurants but I expect it in Nevada. I could understand a restaurant only ban because there are children that may be close by with asthma and trust me asthma is a serious problem in some kids, but if it spreads to casinos where only adults that have made the choice to be in the casino would suprise me.

Oh and don't forget, I think that this is the same group of people that believe that if your opinion is different from theirs..........you are being intolerant!
