Smoking in Texas?

At the end of July my wife and I are going to Texas for vacation. My secret agenda is to convince her to retire there with me. Anyway, I was wondering what the smoking laws are like down there. Here in MA you cannot smoke anywhere anymore and I sure miss sitting in a bar and smoking my cigar. We are going to San Antonio for 3 days then the nearby hill country for 3 days winding up in Austin for 3 days. Also any good places to smoke? I am not much interested in shops as I always travel with my own stash. Any advice would be appreciated including anything else that might be fun to do while we are there. Please, please do not tell me that it will be hot, I have figured that out.

Hello, and a future welcome to Texas! Now, I don't know where any cigar bars are in SA or Austin because I'm still a noob and haven't found any up there yet.... I live in Victoria, just south of SA and Austin, and I smoke at bars when I go out and don't get any flack for it. Restaurants seem a little picky towards cigars though. When you get to Austin, you can go to Sullivan's Steakhouse. I think they have a humidor and a smoke room. I've never been there personally, but I've heard of it.

As for the hill country....I don't think anybody will mind smoking there. That area has one of the most laid back attitudes I know of. Enjoy the Frio! Go see Garner State Park, or camp/rent a cabin in Utopia. You will have no problem pursuading your wife to retire there w/ you.....

p.s. It will be hot! ;)

Cheers :al

i was there a couple weeks ago and i never got any trouble smoking in bars and such. so have at it man.

Steve,

I know on the Riverwalk there are several open air bars where you should be able to smoke.

A cool tourist thing to see near New Brunsfels(sp) It is a cool living cave called Natural Bridge cave, if memory serves me correctly. It is just north of SA. It is a beautiful living cave.

In Houston city limits, they just passed a smoking ban. If the bar or location does not have a closed off smoking section, you can't smoke there.

Lot of bar owners are pissed because people smoke everywhere at a club. Some just said "Fine Me" because they are not spending the money for special ventilations and closed off smoking areas behind walls.

Funny thing, the mayor here was trying to say that cigar and smoking in general and causing the houston polution. Hum..maybe all the traffic and oil refineries are the problem?

Also, two years ago, they lowered our speed limit to 65 because they have a report that said or traffic was the main cause. After everyone complained, they used a study from the 1970's when people used regular gas..lol...Love Houston. Glad we have Bill White instead of the other monkey! (not to be confused with us Gorillas!)

Unless something has changed in the year or so I have been gone from Austin, you could smoke in the bars. Dan McCluskeys steakhouse in the Arboretum shopping area has a really nice cigar friendly bar as well as a nice patio where you can catch some good music and enjoy a good mojito and a cigar and this is the time of the year to do it. Steve, I've lived in San Antonio all my life and currently live 20 minutes away. Smoking down here is very accepted for now, for the most part. There are 4 main cigar shops (The Humidor), all of which you can smoke in. A 5th place called the Cigar Club has a full bar and live entertainment on the weeknights. Our local group hangs there. Also there are a few upscale and many restaurants with outdoor seating that let you smoke cigars. Most bars for that matter too.

Be sure to let me know the exact dates your going be here and we can get together for a celabratory welcome smoke and dinner. San Antonio is a great town! My wife and I moved out to the edge of the hill country 6 years ago and just love it. Nice and quiet out here.

hey if you take i-35 south to get there the first thing youll see in texas is a porn megastore. kind of makes you wonder doesnt it?

California culture is slowly creeping into TX, so you can expect anti-smoking laws to continue to evolve.

Don't retire here. We want the rest of the country to continue to think that we suck, so that we can keep the place to ourselves.

But if you insist on visiting or living here, my favorite cigar bar is http://www.downingstreetpub.com/
