Spiraling costs threaten to extinguish cigar-leaf farms in N.E.'s Tobacco Valley

I worked 9 summers in a row doing that and the first one was too much. And people today complain about hard work.

My grandfather grew Burley tobacco here in East Tenn. As a teenager I worked with him during cutting/hanging season and, oh yeah, it's definitely not easy work!

I only lasted a few weeks. I picked suckers and re wrapped the tops. I went down a complete "ben" when the foreman said I retied the string around the top "heart" and probably killed all the plants.
Then I came up with a bad case of poison ivy and had to quit. Tobacco rash doesn't feel well on poison ivy.:r
To this day everytime I drink Koolaid it reminds me of those two weeks.
