SSSS #4

Beagle Boy

Lowland Gorilla
For those not involved in this blind tasting, we have 10 people who are trying 5 different cigars, one each week (maybe we will get lucky enough that 1 or two will actually review it :cb ). I will reveal what the cigar is at the end of each week.

For those who are part of the tasting, this is NOT about guessing where the cigar is made or who the manufacturer is – so please no guessing in the threads! (you can PM me if you want) This is where you should post your review of Cigar #4 (in case you silly buggers can't count). Following this basic layout:

The format of the review will be this:
Scale will be 1-10 (best)

Looks: describe the appearance, what color is the wrapper, is it oily, what kind of cap does it have – is it pretty

Construction: any soft spots, was it an easy clip, is the draw too tight or loose? How long is the ash holding on for, any burn issues?

Flavors and strength: try to describe the tastes & smells – not just "it's good" or "it's a dog rocket". How strong is the cigar

Overall rating: 1 (never want to see it again) to 10 (want to smoke it for the rest of my life, its perfect) and why did you give it this rating

Would you want it in your Humi: I want a box, it’s a good yard cigar, my brother-in-law likes to mooch

Remember, first and foremost, have fun with this guys!

Sorry for the delay....I got busy on Sunday...but unfortunately not in that way...

Looks: The appearance on this cigar is very quite nice...A lush appearing, nearly veinless Connecticut wrapped Torpedo...maybe Belicoso...cigar measuring 6.5 x 52 at the largest point. The cap is a standard looking two seam piece...This cigar is a pretty one...8/10

Construction: The construction is seemingly solid on this cigar. No soft spots were found prior to lighting/cutting. I cut the cigar in the same manner I have with the last 3. The cap came off with no tearing or splitting around the head of the cigar. The pre-light draw was like the cut, no issues present. The burn is perfect halfway through...no need for any sort of touch up or relight. As far as the ash, it is holding on very firm with a nice light gray coloring...The burn and ash remained perfect throughout the smoke time... 8/10

Flavor/Strength: Off the bat, the cigar had just a slight pepper bite on my lips pre-light...After the light, not so much anymore. The cigar is a nice mild smoke with a bit of a leathery/earthy taste with a nice amount of tobacco flavor to compliment it...The cigar has stayed nice and mild throughout the first two inches of the smoke. After the half way point, the cigar remained mild and the peppery notes from the beginning are long gone...The cigar has now finished nice and rich but still mild and creamy... 8/10

Overall: Overall, this cigar was very good, and the strength was perfect for a 4 am smoke...I did enjoy it quite a bit. As far as keeping these around...I do not think I will buy too many in the future...it does not fit in with my all the time cigars. 8.5/10

The weather this week was a little iffy, so I got to this cigar much later in week than I would have liked.

Prelight Aroma & Flavor:

Hints of leather, something else I can’t place.

Looks:
This belicoso seems to be wrapped in a very light brown Connecticut, and is practically free of veins. The wrapper is silky smooth.

Construction:

The construction looks good, no soft spots. I nipped the cap off and immediately thought I should have cut deeper. I tried to draw on it just to be sure and was amazed with the type of ultra light draw I enjoy so much. Burn seemed ok throughout; I had to touch it up frequently after the second third however. The first ash clung to around 2.5 inches and after than would drop off no later than .5 inches.

Flavor:

The cigar was a nice mild. Very consistent flavor for the most part, it would have been nicer had there been some changes. It started as creamy or buttery leather with mild notes of cedar. Around the second third an acrid ashy flavor started to creep into the cigar and entirely dominated by the last third. I smoked this slowly over an hour and fifteen minutes, so I’m willing to bet that it was just a bum stick for whatever reason. I’ll be trying another once the reveal is posted.

Strength:

Very mild, low nicotine

Overall:

Overall, this cigar was nice. I don’t know if it’s worth a box, but I think I’d pick up a fiver. Having a few more in the future may change my perspective on these guys.
6.5/10

This is as close to ontime as I have been.

Prelight Draw:

Very very mild, hints of tobacco and earth, good draw this is a good sign for me as I prefer lots of smoke from my sticks.

Looks:
Great wrapper on the torp, no veins and smooth construction.

Construction:

Pretty even all the way through, it was quite firm but I wasn't worried based on the prelight draw the firmness did not result in lowered draw.

Toasted it up and fired her up.

The Burn:
It ran on me right from the start, only slightly but that was pretty much how it burnt all the way through. Held a good strong white ash as well. Never went out and didn't heat up at all so either it was a great roll or for a change I wasn't trying to power smoke this stick.

This might be the mildest cigar I have ever smoked. Don't let that be taken as flavorless just very mild. I only drank water with it and I am glad of that as I think even my normal medium roast blend would have overpowered this stick.

Plenty of smoke and the flavors tended toward a leathery earth very consistent with the prelight draw. No changes pretty much through the whole stick, it started to tighten up flavor wise at about the 2/3rds point. I gave it a good purge and a touch up with the torch and went through another inch of it. I noticed i was drinking more than normal (had to get another glass of water for this stick) and can only conclude it was drying me out a bit. As soon as I noticed that this stick was ruined for me, it immedietly tasted dusty..........probably psychosematic but none the less it dried me up so rather than kill the experience I let it go out peacefully.

Strength:

Very mild, not a hint of nicotine to me

Conclusion

Meh, I wouldn't toss it out of my humi, I don't know that I would buy them. Maybe to have a few on hand for non smoker types that want to try, especially with the low nicotine and nothing abusive. It is a pretty good introduction cigar if the build quality of the one I had is consistent with they whole line.

OK here is my review. Stream of conciousness review here.

Looks: A torpedo with a light brown wrapper, fairly smooth, small veins in the wrapper. When viewed at the foot it appears to be rolled well. Has a slight box press to it. Overall it looks like a nice cigar - 8

Construction: No soft spots and seems to be constructed well. Cuts easily and has a perfect draw which always a plus for a torpedo. Lights easily and gets right up to “smoking speed”. Ash is dark grey to black. Burns pretty evenly. – 8

Flavors and strength: Has an earthy barnyard kind of smell to it prelight. Upon lighting I get a flavor that reminds me of charcoal. That disappears quickly, probably an artifact of the lighting. The initial flavors are of cedar with molasses/sweet flavors in the background. Right now this reminds me a lot of cigar #1. Leaves a pleasant aftertaste in the mouth. Lots of smoke with each small puff – the draw is perfect on this puppy. A nice smooth smoke so far. The flavor of this smoke is a little bit stronger than cigar 1. Very enjoyable early afternoon cigar. Left it sitting in my ashtray for a few minutes while I was responding to an e-mail (discussing what classes to take next year in school) and it stayed lit which I like since I tend to get distracted. The charcoal flavor return. I have never tasted this before. It’s very pleasant. This is a great cigar to exhale through the nose. Very smooth. Don’t know if it’s because it’s a milder smoke or it has some age on it. Halfway through the sweetness dissipates. Cedar and wood flavors predominate. This is a fun cigar to smoke. It just sits there idling waiting for you to pick it up and puff and rewards you with nice flavor and lots of smoke. The last third consists of flavors of cedar and earth - 10

Overall rating: A very nice mild smoke. Good flavor, perfect draw, lots of smoke – 8

Would you want it in your Humi: I’d like to have a few of these around.

Holiday weekend looks to have taken it's toll on a few of our tasters

I picked up this cigar after trying it at a Big Smoke - I was surprised, I had written off this maker as not having anything that fit my taste profiles, but there are now a couple of more recent lines that can work for me.

I do think it's a fairly mild cigar, and one of the reasons that I picked up the box was for the people who show up at a HERF that might not really understand what you mean if you ask them what flavor profile they like

The cigar is:
Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real #2
6.13 by 52
Romeo Y Julieta Reserva Real is a fine cigar handmade in the Dominican Republic using a creamy Connecticut-Ecuador wrapper. The binder and filler are a tasty blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobaccos. The flavor is medium-bodied and nutty with a toasty finish

I will have the thread for cigar #5 up in a few minutes, hopefully a nice little treat for everyone

That's funny, I was sitting outside with Zmancbr while smoking this and he asked I if I had some sort of impression of where this was from: I told him I wanted to say the DR or Nicaragua. - I made a hugely lucky guess. :tu

Nutty! That's the flavor I couldn't identify. And I'm thinking toasty is probably what I described as charcoal. I'm learning a lot from this. I can taste it but put my finger on it. These taste buds are old! RyJ - well it was a nice smoke!

This nicely rolled torpedo has a light brown wrapper. Construction was solid, although the foot had a slight chip out of the wrapper. The smoke was sweet and mild. It didn't change much through the whole stick. It was a pleasant smoke. All of these so far have been much milder than I usually smoke, but none have been unpleasant. It has offered a nice change to my usual smokes.

The Series V was much milder than your usual smoke?

I would have to say yes. This may have as a result of my unfamiliarity with the lancero shape...I might have failed to allow the stick to rest sufficiently to appreciate the true character of the smoke itself.

I was drinking a lot over the 4th and had 3 cigars a day, i didn't find it fair to lump smoking this cigar into that weekend so it unfortunately is a bit late... but better later than never.

Looks: Nice Connecticut wrapped Torpedo. very smooth, soft to the touch, even thickness, and smells of spice and hay pre-light. Perfect prelight draw as well 3/3

Construction: This cigar burned almost perfectly, I had to turn the cigar from time to time to put the beginnings of a canoe onto the bottom, however, it corrected itself shortly. 2/2

Flavor/Strength: This cigar tasted like shit... I wouldn't smoke it again by choice.... 0/5

Overall: Overall this cigar is like a supermodel, great looking, good smelling, and amazing to the touch... but just nothing there when it comes to important things. 5/10

Ahhhh. A nice looking torpedo. The prelight smell was nice and would say it was a medium bodied cigar. The prelight draw was excellent. The wrapper was in excellent condition and the weather outside was perfect at around 70 degrees. Time to light it up!

The initial taste was average at best and was rather disappointed. Then after about 1/2 inch burn the taste turned into something very pleasurable. It continued to develop all the way through and nubbed this one fo' sho'. The burn was very good and required no touch-ups. It was a solid medium bodied cigar that I would definitely keep in my humidor.

I rate it a 9 out of 10!!!
