SSSS #5

Beagle Boy

Lowland Gorilla
This is it boys, the last one for this little tasting - I hope you enjoyed it

For those not involved in this blind tasting, we have 10 people who are trying 5 different cigars, one each week (maybe we will get lucky enough that 1 or two will actually review it ). I will reveal what the cigar is at the end of each week.

For those who are part of the tasting, this is NOT about guessing where the cigar is made or who the manufacturer is – so please no guessing in the threads! (you can PM me if you want) This is where you should post your review of Cigar #5 (in case you silly buggers can't count). Following this basic layout:

The format of the review will be this:
Scale will be 1-10 (best)

Looks: describe the appearance, what color is the wrapper, is it oily, what kind of cap does it have – is it pretty

Construction: any soft spots, was it an easy clip, is the draw too tight or loose? How long is the ash holding on for, any burn issues?

Flavors and strength: try to describe the tastes & smells – not just "it's good" or "it's a dog rocket". How strong is the cigar

Overall rating: 1 (never want to see it again) to 10 (want to smoke it for the rest of my life, its perfect) and why did you give it this rating

Would you want it in your Humi: I want a box, it’s a good yard cigar, my brother-in-law likes to mooch

Remember, first and foremost, have fun with this guys! :D

Just thought of one other thing - I will be in Vegas at the RTDA show next weekend - I should be able to reveal the cigar with my phone, or find some place that has free wi-fi

so please be patient if I am a bit late or short with my thoughts on it

Last but not least....SSSS #5....Sorry for the delay....

Appearance: The final stick is a lovely reddish hued Corona box pressed stick with a triple seam cap and a near veinless wrapper. The ash produced at this point has been a salt and pepper mix....9/10

Construction:The final stick is a very solid and well made stick pre-light and pre-cut. No soft spots are present and the cut was near flawless. The pre-light draw was unobstructed by any major issues. The lighting was done via match and evenly lit off the bat. The burn has stayed relatively sharp, although it tends to "wander" a bit from time to time, easily resolved by turning the stick. The ash has not held on for much more than a half-inch...9/10

Flavor/Strength: Right off the bat, before lighting, a lot of spice can be found on the lips along with a bit of that "island" taste. The leather and tobacco taste is incredibly apparent in this stick...The strength thus far has been a very medium body, nothing too much overpowering...DO NOT INHALE...9/10

Final Thoughts: I liked the stick...A LOT...I would keep these on hand...9/10

Well yesterday I decided to play catch up and smoked #4 & #5 cigars. The weather here in San Diego was perfect at around 70 degrees so I decided to work outside for the day (and am doing the same today). Anyways, onto the review...

The appearance of the cigar was nice with a red hue to the wrapper and a nice corona box shape. The construction was good but the prelight draw was a little loose for my tastes.

Once lit, the taste was average at best. Like #4, I was hoping this would open up but it never did. It was a medium bodied cigar with virtually no spice or flavor. I got rid of it with about an inch left. The burn was average with only a few touch ups.

I rate it a 3 out of 10.

Looks: Nice light brown wrapper, looks like it may have some age on it. Is that a double or an ugly triple cap? - 8

Construction: Nicely rolled, cuts nice, draw is perfect, lights easily burn is dead on. Has a slight box press which I like. Gives me a corner to hold on to so I don’t fall off! – 9

Flavors and strength: Spicy, nutty, toasty, cocoa – yep that’s what I tasted in the first few puffs after I lit up. Might have been those wasabi chocolate covered toasted almonds I ate just before I lit up. Anyway those flavors went away replaced by cedar/woodsy and earth flavors. A slight acridness to the smoke in my mouth. Acridness faded after I purged. Nice and smooth on the exhale out the ole schnozola. Lots of nice smoke on this baby. Develops a slight creamy flavor along with the cedar and earth. Very nice. One note: it was pretty hot at work and I don’t think I drank enough so I am a little dehydrated which will throw my palate off some. Drinking lots of wawa right now as well. If I’m going to die from dehydration I want to make sure I get this review!! Develops some sweetness halfway through. The flavors didn’t change much for me after that. - 7

Overall rating: A pretty good smoke. – 7

Would you want it in your Humi: Nope.

Thankks for running this! A lot of fun!

light brown wrappered corona exhibited good firm construction, but went downhill from there. upon ignition it got spongy. as soon as i got through the initial firing, it tasted foul; like soap. some might interpret it as "floral notes" but it was bitter and not pleasant. I struggled on a bit, but pitched at about half way. life's too short. -4

Looks: Nice Connecticut wrapped petite corona. very smooth, soft to the touch, even thickness, and no discernible scents. the prelight draw was a bit tight 1.5/3

Construction: This cigar burned almost perfectly, I had to turn the cigar from time to time to put the beginnings of a canoe onto the bottom, however, it corrected itself shortly. 2/2

Flavor/Strength: This cigar was smokable, but didn't come alive with any flavors, I paired it with a strong scotch and was hardly sipping the scotch at all as I had nothing in the cigar to pair it with. There was maybe a hint of coco, but it didn't last long. Toward the end of the cigar the flavors started turning south and un-smokable. After a last ditch effort of a double purge it remained uncorrected. All and all I would say a good yard gar. 1.5/5

Overall: This cigar was pretty to look at, decent to smell... like a cigar and burned well with little attention. a great stick for smoking whilst doing something else. 5/10

I'm late on this one, sorry:

Prelight Aroma/Flavor:
Leather and nutty maybe?
Look:
SSSS #5 is a bit of a mystery. There is either a very ugly triple cap or a double cap. The stick looks like it might have a light box press. The foot is square on two sides and then rounded; this odd semi-box press runs about half the length of the cigar at which point there is no sign of the box press. Wrapper is a wheat brown, almost golden save a long green blemish near the foot.

Construction:
Other than the oddball press on this stick there don’t look to be any construction issues, it’s firm yet springy and pre-light draw indicated a light draw with very slight resistance. Perfect in my book. Ash was mostly white and hung loosely to the cigar often flaking and making a general mess of my pants and shirt.

Flavor:

Light floral flavors when snorking and touches of coco were prominent in the first inch of the cigar. Leather and a nutty flavor quickly replaced the coco and stayed rather consistent. Toward the end of the last third, having no prior issues with keeping lit, the cigar suddenly died four times, I decided to let it go at this point. Flavors were light nothing really jumped out at me with the smoke, but I did enjoy it quite a bit.

Strength:
It was quite mild.
Overall Rating:
6 - I’d keep a fiver in my humi I think, but I’d want to smoke a few more before committing to a box.

This and #3, which surprised me by being oliva... were my favorites. Thanks so much for running this, it was a great event and I learned a lot.

BeagleBoy is unable to post the reveal at this time...he is on a short vacation but the reveal will be made soon....I know what it is and frankly I loved it...it is going to entertain you guys to know what this stick is...you will all find out soon...all I can say....the SSSS#5 is from 2003....

Sorry guys, could not post from my phone.

Ok this cigar is a '03 Punch P....... nuts! Mods this tread needs to be moved one room to the south

With offending words removed for the time being:
Perhaps one of the best Coronas Gordas of the vitola range. This format is where it is shown that Punch enjoys the full flavor of the big formats. It is a %#(@*$& that is recognized and admired by great enthusiasts. It is generous and smooth, both in its aromas and its flavor and, for its gauge size, it goes further as it is smoked. It has both a splendid draw and a great combustion.

I will put together a summary of the tasting over the weekend - the three guys who have not followed up on their side of the review agreement need to be called out... The rest of you, thanks, I hope you have enjoyed this.

Man never would have guessed it. At least I noticed the cigar had some age on it.

As far as the members who took the cigars and did not participate I am thinking of giving them negative RG....very uncool to take advantage of a brother like that. I have never dinged anyone but this ticks me off. This place is built on trusting each other.

I agree whole heartedly.....about the dinging...

Sorry if the spreadsheet doesn't come across like it should
the cigars were:
#1 was the Tres Hermanos out of New Orleans
#2 was the Ashton Puro Sol - statistically tied for second place in this tasting
#3 was the Olivia Serie V - best average score, but a few burn issues due to size
#4 was the R&J Reserva Real - statistically tied for second place in this tasting
#5 was the '03 Punch @#$% - surprised by the low rating, must have been Fugazzi :D

I hope that you enjoyed this experiment! As I sent out before starting this if you did enjoy it, and want to return something, Mrs. Floyd has my addy in the rolodex

Thanks to all that took part,

Mike

Beagle, I just gave u a positive feedback and apologized. I can give my reviews by tomorrow. I really do need to apologize. I was in California herfing with the SoCal and S.H.I.T group for around 4 weeks. Did not know I would be able to go.

You were extremely gracious. Let me know what I can do to make this right.
