Steve Mc Manus, no vote

I titled this post in hopes that Mr Mc Manus might find this when he googels his name.

Steve Mc Manus (R Cordova) TN has led the charge to passing a no smoking law in TN that is expected to be signed by our Tn Gov. Phil Bredesen this friday.

I'd like to thank him for his superior intelect that has inspired him to create a bill that infringes on the rights of thebusiness owners and citizens of my state. If it werent for such, Smart politicians looking out for my best interest I dont know how I'd get by.

I guess we common citizens just arent smart enough to make these kinds of decisions for ourselves. Next the morality police will be telling me I cant smoke in my own home....

Just venting, I dont smoke in public places often, but should I desire to I think that should be between me and the business owner, not some stuffed shirt... Beware of politicians taking our rights to choose, smoking this time, whats next??

I actualy live in Mr Manus district..... he'll get one less vote next time, same for Mr. Bredesen.

You are lucky you live in a state that has only gotten to smoking in public. The nanny state lives, not only are they now going after smoking on your own private property, they are going after everything else too. I told all my non smoking friends that after smoking they are gonna find a new cause and so it is. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing is a particularly appropriate quote right now as is We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. Just wish more people acted that way (bold is added by me)

Almost every state has in the law an out stating if the business makes x% of there income from the sale of tobacco products smoking is allowed. I think in CT its in the 70% range but I am not sure, certain others here would be better equipped to answer that
 
He is just another Representative of the huge no smoking alliance across the country..They target certain states that they think they have a chance to get the law passed then use one of the idiots we elect to present the bill..When Minnesota voted out the republicans and the democrats got into power then this was the time to present the bill again..There is a tactic they use that when they know they have enough votes to pass they will not give in to any exceptions and its across the board. After all they are worried sick about the waitstaff and bartenders that are falling over in record numbers. They won't quit until all 50 states are smoke free,,then there will be no smoking around any children or that will be considered child abuse..By the way be sure to watch the news when the Governor signs the bill into law and watch these assholes yelling and high fiving each other..

I agree that the nanny state is alive and well. Governments never consider their citizens to be smart enough to think for themselves.

What bothers me is not so much banning smoking in public spaces but the possibility of banning smoking on your own private property.

Legislators have the responsibility to legislate for the public health, safety and welfare. With in this the police power they are responsible for such things as seeing to it that living conditions are not a blight or disparate on the community. Smoking in public naturally falls under the police power. The government has the ability to govern towards the non smoking majority thus legislating for their health. The dangers of second hand smoke are now well known and documented and thus the legislature is inclined to act.

I believe that a public smoking ban would up hold these self-evident rights. The framers of the constitution worked on a principle of liberty not freedom. Liberty implies a level of responsibility by citizens and the government that freedom does not. By smoking in public your smoke infringes on the rights of non smokers around you. The non smokers have the right to breath clean air. In Tennessee I think the legislature is getting its powers for the governed because polling has shown that only 25% of Tennesseans are against the law despite the fact that it includes privetley held properties with in the smoking ban.

The Tennessee law does allow for smoke shops to allow smoking on the premises.

Despite what I have said above I am against the law.

The science that the EPA based their warning about second hand smoke on is bogus. When the results of the study did not present the desired outcome, the basis was lowered so the results would support the desired outcome. Other studies with stricter rules have not come to the same conclusion on second hand smoke. Granted, most of the time I prefer a smokeless environment when eating, but that should be up to the business owner.

Strangely I actually agree with the law in most part but there should be exceptions. I should be allowed to smoke in my house or on my own property if I like. I should be able to open a business that caters s[ecfically to smokers and allows them to smoke onsite.

Absolutely,,all you have to do is ask yourself,,if second hand smoke was that dangerous,,then we must have had a pandemic back in the 50s 60s and 70s,, during those years smoking was prevalent everywhere.First the annual deaths from second hand smoke was 3000 ,,then a few years ago it was up to 49,000.. The tactic is throw out a figure and say it enough times and people will accept it.. I want to see the hard data and how it is collected..I don't believe any of the figures...

We can't possibly be willing to argue the fact that the inhalation of smoke is bad for your health? I mean is that what we think?

I agree that it could effect your health but no where near what we are being told.. Car exhaust also effects your health as does many other things..What I said earlier is that if 49,000 deaths are attributed to second hand smoke now,,there should have been millions in earlier years and there wasn't so where did these statistics come from../

Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Hapiness. Does that mean I do it myself or someone else does it for me? I am all for being able to breath clean air. I go to no smoking restaurants because I like to smell my food not someone's smoke. I am also a respectable person and I smoke in areas where I am around people that don't mind if someone does mind then the situation should dictate who should leave. What we are in the middle of is the backlash of millions of dollars being thrown at Hollywood in the 40's and 50's to make ciggarettes look cool and then millions thrown at our Gov't to turn a blind eye. Now you have a society that is rights based instead of responsibility based. It's all about my right to smoke or my right to breath clean air only instead of taking responsibility to direct our pursuit of hapiness we expect someone else to do it for us. Hense Mr. Steve Mc Manus. Alright bring on the :mn
