Stoggie Discusion:TV Dads

With tomorrow being Fathers Day, and since I am sure there will be a thread tomorrow just for fathers day, I thought I make a thread to discuss various dad's on television and their smoking of cigars.

Now, I would say prior to the 1970's, Most TV dads where pipe smokers, but that trend changed towards cigars, and lead into the 90's and even early 2000's.

Exception to the above is the character of Philip Banks on the "Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air" who, in one episode, smoked a pipe in a homage to TV dads of years gone by.

A few of the more well know TV dads who smoked the cigar are:

Archie Bunker

Tim Taylor

George Lopez

Bill Cosby (Not sure if he ever smoked a cigar on the Crosby Show)

Bernie Mac (see above)

James Gandolfini

Grandpa Munster (pretty sure there where episodes where he smoked, and at least one where he smoked with Herman)

Herman Munster

Now, since TV and films are normally a reflection of our culture, I figured this might make a good discussion about the impact of popular culture on cigars and vice versa and why the sudden change from Pipe smoking dads to cigar smoking dads.

Does it have to do with living in a more fast paced world? what are your thoughts and feelings?

Hopefully this thread is ok to be here and that I wrote it well enough to provoke a fun discussion.

:)

Bill Cosby (Not sure if he ever smoked a cigar on the Cosby Show)

He did at least once, when he was showing a friend his "secret place" in the basement.

It looked like it was primarily two hard wood outdoor-type chairs with a smoking stand in between. He made reference to a stash of his favorite Cubans (from which he proceeded to light up with his friend), having no kid-friendly furniture in sight, and having his blues collection at hand, including one record he'd played till the grooves wore out.

I remember Magnum P.I., who was not a dad, always snatching cigars from the desktop humi. But I really don't remember anyone else. Did Redd Foxx of Stanford & Son smoke? He seemed like a gorilla sort of guy.

I seem to recall Al Bundy smoking a few cigars too. Now he was a great tV Dad.:r
:tpd: I still love that show :ss

lol, Al and Homer should have deff. made my list. I just didnt recall if Homer had ever smoked a cigar, or if Al did.

When I was a kid, I had a Al Bundy shirt that said "A man's home is his coffin" lol

That sportswriter that Jack Klugman played in The Odd Couple was separated from his wife and kids but he smoked cigars. I might be wrong but I think that on occasion Lorne Green smoked a cigar in Bonanza.
