!!!!thief!!!

I am soooo, pissed right now! I'm in the Navy and have to go to this school so I can contiune my carrer on a Virgina class submarine. I move away from my Wife and 2 kids and new home to Groton Ct. So, my money for housing is going to the mortage and the only place I can live is in the barraks. All the guys here are kids atraight outa bootcamp. But, I thought I lucked out because my roomate has the same ammount of time in as me 5 years. The only thing I worried about when I found out I had to share a room was my cigars. I have a coolidor (igloo ice cube 75 can ver) that I did not think I had to lock. Well, I bought a five pack of maccanudo vin 1993 jamaican robustos and was letting them age in it. To my supprise one is missing! I have now organised all my cigars because they were scattered about. Labeled them taken pictures and marked areas, and left a nice little note to the next person that opens my humi. I go thru my cigars pretty quick so I hope that 1 is the extent of the damage. The problems are I cant prove it was my roomate, it could have been a BPO (barraks petty officer) they have keys to all the rooms, but they are suposta leave a note when they enter a room. And I dont know how to lock up a coolidor. Velcroing a lock can be ripped off, screws will defenitaly not work... I'm so fu@king pissed cause I can prove who it was other than looking my roomate straight in they eyes and asking him, I still wont have proof.

Sorry to hear that man. I can not stand a thief. Not one bit. Getting something that will secure the cooler is going to be a little hard. Since it is plastic, nothing is going to hold well I do not think. Maybe the BOTL here can come up with some ideas.

Sorry to hear about the stolen cigar(s). Have you thought about a strap, or cable wrapped around the coolerdor. I know it's not foolproof, but it might be better than none at all. Somebody who may open an unlocked 'dor, might not try to break into a locked one (even weakly so) if they're only looking for one or two.

I imagine it's tough to keel haul someone on a submarine. You could give it a try next time out on manuvers. Of course you'd have to find out who it was...

Install sonar equipment in the coolidor. A small recording device... James Bond the bastard. Have it shoot them if it is not opened properly. I'm sure there are plans on the internet.

How about a car alarm?

Terrible thoughts. Sometimes you just can't protect youself enough. Best of luck though.

You could buy a hasp from a hardware store and get yourself a lock.

It's unfortunate that you can't trust ALL of your fellow sailors. I was in the Navy from 92-98. I had a few things stolen from me, one being a very nice Almar knife that is no longer produced. I'm still mad about it whenever I think about it. But, the fact is that the Navy and the military in general is just a small slice of society at large. The military has its bad elements. Otherwise, there'd be no use for a brig.

:hn is too good for em!

Sorry to hear it. Been almost 28 years since I was in a Navy school.... sounds like things haven't changed much

They make coolers that can be locked with a lock. I don't remember who makes them but I've seen them around. I'll look and see if I can locate one for ya.

NAVSUBSUPFAC New London? I was also in the Navy and did my last tour of duty there. I also spent time in the barracks before I brought my wife out and moved off base. All hope is not lost. You can get some thin metal strips from Home Depot and bend them into a clasp (they will basically wrap around the humid then join together). Drill a hole where they lay together. Buy pads of Presto felt as well to stick to the undersides of the metal so that you don't damage the humi itself. Two of them, one to go around the humi length wise and one width wise. Two cheap padlocks and at least you'll frustrate whoever did it. There are lots of solutions though. I'd recommend Home depot and talk about with them, they may have something better looking right up your alley.

They don't have the closet or desk lockers that lock anymore? I recall having them when I lived in the barracks.

And I am also very sorry to hear about that. I've lost many things in the Navy when I was on the Forrestal..... Sigh the good ole days.;)

Or this could be a good excuse for a Vicksburg..... it locks.

Thanks guys, I just asked my roomate and I belive him. Stogie, that gave me the soultion, get some plastic covered metal rope, like a couble bike locks. And criss cross them around the coolidor connecting them tight with a paddlock. My roomate says there is a driver to hook up his webcam that serves as a motion detector, it will record when anything passes in front of it. I fell a little better now, thanks guys. But I will feel even better if we get the guy on video tape!

Make sure to NOT lock them up if you are going to go with the web cam solution... you might lose a few sticks but I think you'l get em back in spades!

Exactly my thoughts as well.

You can't do this in the Navy for obvious reasons, but when I was in college and food items started going missing from a community refrigerator I just put a note on a couple of my items that read: Take what you want but I don't recommend eating it as one random food item of mine in this fridge has some nasty bug killer sprayed on it. Good Luck....

I would put a note in the box saying "note to self, the cigar that I sprayed with bug poison to kill the tobacco beetles is on the (word obliterated by coffee stain)"

Looks like you have this solved but here is what I would have done.

I would have approached the roommate and asked if he helped himself but made it clear that you don't mind if he ever wants one . . . just ask next time. Make sure to let him know that you would enjoy smoking a cigar with him sometime if that was the case.

You may have someone to smoke with if all goes well.

I see your point, but I asked him and I belive him. I gave him a good atarter smoke when we went to the casino last weekend a cusano cc, about 20 min after he lit it up I noticed it was gone. So, that sums it up that he dosent really like cigars and did not do it. But, we got the webcam all set it with a motion detector that will record and save a movie with no one knowing about it. Gotta love those Navy uniforms with the last name all over them= busted!

Those web cams don't work for :BS in the dark though. Be sure to leave the lights on.

Sorry to hear it. I know one thing that is absolutely not tolerated on subs is a theiving bastard. Most likely you will find out who it was, and I know that when I was in, we had... methods of dealing with that kind of person.

Yep, when you do catch him, get the ole trusty cutter out and lop off a finger for each stick he stole - that'll learn him!:)
