Traveling with cigars...

Hello....new to the forum and have a couple of questions:

1. I will be traveling to Tampa in April and want to purchase some cigars and bring them home. Is a Ziploc bag sufficient for travel or do I need to buy a travel humidor?

2. I recently bought a humidor that will hold about 50 cigars. I "seasoned" the inside according to the directions, but it is hovering around 60RH right now. Shouldn't it be closer to 70 for optimal humidity?

Any advice/suggestions are much appreciated.

1.a ziplock will be fine if the temperature stays reasonable.
2.I'd be happy with it anywhere between 60 and 70%.
You might want to test your hygrometer to make sure its reading ok...

Except that I would add that you need to be mindful that a zip lock bag provides no protection for the cigars from being crushed. So, just be careful where you put them.
 
depending on how many you want to buy. I think that small tupperware container would work great to protect them from getting crushed. You could also mail them home. Just my :2
 
The bigger problem I have with transporting in a baggie is crushing. Unless you are sure you are not going to squish them (seems to always happen if I stick it in a jacket pocket), I would get a travel thingy. Otherwise, a baggie should be fine humidity wise. But an otterbox cigar case works great, you can get them in 5-10-15-20+ sizes, and can often find a deal on them. I find them useful for generally transporting cigars.

There are a lot of factors in humidors, if it stays 60-70 I think that is fine, and my prefs are 70ish for seasoning, and 60-65 for smoking.
 
Ziplock is fine for a week or two.

But if traveling and you are a cigar smoker a Cigar Caddy or Otter Box is a great investment to protect your cigars. Its something you will get a lot of use out of.

I would agree with this statement and throw a humidity pack in if ya got one. :tu
 
ziplock bags are fine, but if you have an empty cigar box or can buy one i'd use that for a little extra protection and keep them in my carry on. In fact this is what I did when I flew to San Antonio from pittsburgh
 
I'm very happy with my Otterbox (although I wish I'd bought a bigger one! Five cigars isn't enough for a week if you're going to be sharing.) If it's just for a couple days I think a ziploc would be fine in terms of humidity, but as others have noted it's no good for crush protection if you're going to be packing them.
 
I tend to smoke more when I travel as the girlfriend is not along so 5 might last a day and a half honestly!

As for your questions the only thing I can add is please dont check your sticks on the plane. It is just not worth the risk, carry on is the only way to go.

That's what I do when I travel. The cigars go in a ziploc with a water pillow and then I load them in a cigar box. I also enjoy the looks on my friends faces when I bring a Diamond Crown Maximus box or a Davidoff box with me and then hand them a Punch Pita from inside.

Punch Pita: $4.60 per cigar
Diamond Crown Maximus box: free
Look on your friends face when you hand him a Punch Pita from a Diamond Crown Maximus box: priceless
 
I second the cigar caddy.. a 5-count one will only run you about $25 and they're nearly indestructible.. Waterproof, crushproof, airtight. That way you don't have to worry about your cigars getting mangled while you're travelling.
 
:tuA baggie will work but please, for your own peace of mine, carry them on the plane with you. Keep them close. Stop by Metropolitan Cigar Store in Ybor City and check them out.
 
I have used both a caddy and a bag with no problems - another option to consider may be to ship them to yourself right before you leave for home or to a friend near you that can hold them (ideally a BOTL w/ a humidor...)

A ziplock bag works well if you just want to keep the humidity in. If you want protection get a travel humidor. A 20 ct humidor could work well also and they're usually pretty inexpensive too. Right now I'm using an old cigar box that seals well and with a humi pack it's been keep a steady 70.
