tubo or no tubo?

I was checking out the humi and pulled a H Upman 1844 natural tubo to burn. I popped the tube open and out came a nice little stick with the beginnings of mold? I thought WTH? I thought these babys were hermeticially sealed like Twinkies(c) or something. So I think back a few weeks when my cooler humidity went way up and guess this was the cause. So my question is, how can tubos be sealed and strill suffer from excessive humidity? The remaining 8 from this batch are now naked in my regular humi.....Should I open ALL the tubos or put the rest in for "adjustment" ?
 
I wouldn't trust that any tubo is completely sealed from the outside environment... It sounds like the extra humidity got caught up in there (even after things calmed down in your coolerdor) & that caused the mold (spores are EVERYWHERE!)... Glad you caught it before they were all mouldy!
 
I'm beginning to wonder if something is up at the factory.

It's always Upmanns with the mold.

The ONLY two times I've ever seen mold in any of my humidors were Upmanns outside of their plastic. Different cigars, differernt humidors, different time of year, got them from different places, different everything except the brand.

Same thing happened to my buddy. "Hey, man, I got a cigar with some mold on it in my humi."

"Yeah, what was it?"

"H. Upmann."

I typically open the tubos and inspect the cigars before placing them in my humi and have yet to encounter mold problems. I don't know if it is because I open them and they don't reseal entirely or if I have just been lucky but that is my experience to date.
 
Removing cap looks good for presentation, but in the end the tubo will have the same RH capped not capped. Uncapped will come to equilibrium quicker. The only tubed cigars that are totally sealed are glass tube cigars, and are marketed as such.

You may try taping the threads with PVC tape like a plumber and then securing the cap on your tubos. This could potentially seal the tubo for good.

I've got at least one tubo that has a cork composite insert in the cap. Probably goes a long way toward keeping the humidity constant but I wouldn't trust it for more than a day.
 
I remove the cigar for inspection and then usually place it back in the tubo, minus the lid for storing in my humi.
 
well form my experiences some tubos are sealed better than others, the main function of a tubo is to simple protect the cigar and to look cool, they do come in handy when your golfing or doing something where a cigar bag in not the best option, but they are not ment to be air tight and keep the humidity in. opening up all your tubos are not necessary probobly, but if it gives you a better piece of mind then go for it
 
After reading these horror stories with tubos, it seems always best to inspect some of them otherwise you may risk your whole stock.

Just look at a couple of tubos from the box, and they look good; you're all set. If they have mold, then best to look at all of them and smoke off the worst ones first. Usually, wiping the mold off will do the trick.
 
I bought an H. upman(havana) from a B&M last week. opened i when I got home and guess what mold. The worst part was I took it back to the store and he said it was plume(because it wasn't blue of yellow) and wouldn't help me out. From looking at the pictures around on the website I am 99% sure it is mold. So basically I spent $13 for nothing:mad:

What did you want him to do? Did you ask to exchange it or ask for your money back? I like to see my cigars before walking out of a B&M.

Always inspect cigars if possible to avoid having to go back or disappointment.
 
i like tubos only for use as a transport or gifting, otherwise they come out of the tube before going into the humi. i'm also a cello off kinda guy, but i always have a few assorted empty cello and tubos when needed for transportation and the like.

I wanted to exchange it, the only reason I didn't open it was I had bought another one and looked at it and it was fine. I know now to inspect my cigars before I leave the B&M. The only reason I was dissapointed was that he basically said that I didn't know what I was talking about and that it was plume becuase it was white. this logic has been proved wrong on many ocassions.
 
I store tubos with the cap on, and take them out of the tube a few days before smoking them to let them acclimate properly. I do it that way mostly because the RyJ tubos are way too wet and so have hard draws if I don't, and if I do it for the RyJs I might as well do it for all of them.
