Two good reads on smoking: 'Decline of smoking culture' and 'Tobacco and the Soul'

A lot of people in the pipe section have enjoyed reading an article on the unfortunate decline of smoking culture that I posted a link to.

I just discovered a similar article on the philosophical side on the relation of smoke and the soul inspired by Plato.

While I entirely agree with the first author, there are political and sociological implications and a lack of general oversight in the second article that might make it arguable. Yet it is still a nice read.

I read the first one when it was first posted; indeed an unfortunate turn of events for (once) Great Britain.

The second one...I didn't agree with everything in it (the last para looked like PC boilerplate to please the Party) but it's still some intriguing food for thought.

Yes, you are right, food for thought, just like a good cigar or pipe is fuel for good thoughts. In the second one he is 'philosophizing' rather free-style but it still is interesting to read.
