What am I missing?

I've been basically smoking large ring guage cigars for quite a while now (55 and larger). Am I missing anything by not smoking smaller ring guages, like say lanceros for example?

Some folks like big RG cigars, some don't. It is interesting to try different sizes from a certain line of cigars though, say if you like Pepin Blacks they have a 5.5" X 38 RG and a 6" X 60 RG. For me personally it's a comfort thing mostly, I tend to shy away from anything bigger than a 50-52 RG. Just not comfortable to hold between my teeth. Also with smaller RG cigars you have more wrapper, which will bring the wrapper flavor to the forefront. And a lot of smaller RG cigars have more "bite" than their larger counterparts.

Try a few lanceros and see if ya like 'em! :ss

I've been considering trying the Oliva Serie V Lancero. They seem to be plentiful in the B&Ms in these parts. And folks keep raving about them in the review section here.

If it helps any I think the V Lancero is the only one of the line that is better than average. :2

I really enjoy the Marevas/Minutos sizes. I think that the bigger sizes are more forgiving for fast smoking, have often a better draw and give you more smoke.
You get a lot more wrapper flavor on the smaller rg cigars. Just pick up a small rg out of a line that you enjoy and give them another try.

Thanks for the reply guys. Looks like I'm off to the B&M for some smokes today. Gonna have to slip in to Bond mode and smuggle them into the house before the wife sees them!

I just found a Romeo y Juileta in the bottom of my humi. No idea when I bought it, so I'll fire it up and let you guys know the results!

I say smoke everything, it helps you balance just exactly what you like.

You're right. My problem is that I tend to stick with the first thing that I like. But since this is a hobby, I guess it wouldn't hurt to broaden my horizons a bit. Even though if I like them it's gonna be like a turbo boost down the slope!

I like all ring gauge cigars. I might have to start experimenting with the lanceros. For some reason, I didn't like the Oliva V lancero, but like the other V's.

I personally prefer the larger ring guages to smaller ones. I'm not talking insanely large or anything... just like in the 50-56RG range, and there's two reasons why. One is cause I like the cooler smoke. Larger RG's are said to smoke cooler than smaller RG's. Also, being the price isn't usually too much more for a longer or thicker cigar I usually opt for the extra size. I also prefer longer cigars as they smoke longer.

However, it doesn't in any way mean I won't smoke smaller RG cigars, I certainly will! But, if I have a choice I always opt for the thicker longer cigars. Heh... thicker and longer... :r :bn Sometimes certain things just don't sound right hahaha.

I used to be exclusively large ring gauge (never under a 50 ) up until about five months ago and then I had a box of illusione f9s sent to me. That changed my perspective immensely. The flavor was great and I was surprised how comfortable the smaller ring gauge was in my hand. Now, about a 1/3 of my purchases are smaller ring gauge.

This is interesting to me because 99% of the cigars in my stash are either robustos, churchills, or torpedos. I have looked down my nose (shame on me) at smaller ring gauge cigars but recently heard that some master blenders smoke coronas to see how their blends taste.

If a smaller cigar is a good enough acid test for them I suppose I should give them a chance - not to mention they are cheaper!:bl

I prefer 50 rg or less just do to the the time it takes to smoke it. For me 1 to 1/2 hours is all the time I can spare to smoke with 2 young kids. Robusto's and Corona's are what my humi is mostly filled with.

As a newbie I started out being really attracted to Robustos, Pedo's, and the such, but have recently really found an attraction to Lancero's and pretty much all of the smaller and longer stuff.

They have to be longer in the smaller RG's as I can't stand hot smoke.

Well, after smoking that RyJ Lancero, I gotta admit it was damned tasty. Maybe it was because it's been resting in my humi for who knows how long or if it was smaller gauge. Gonna have to go get more. I also admit that it was nice to be able to keep it in my mouth with out the smoke burning the #$^% out of my eyes! Plus it was a little more comfortable to hold too. Draw was a little tighter than what I'm used to. Is that common to the smaller guages?
