What am I missing?

I have come to believe the smaller ring gauge cigars will rest (come back around) faster so for rott or near rott smoking they are the way to go. If you routinely let your smokes rest for 4-6 months you are going to get the same results (or better IMO) with the larger rg.

Well, after smoking that RyJ Lancero, I gotta admit it was damned tasty. Maybe it was because it's been resting in my humi for who knows how long or if it was smaller gauge. Gonna have to go get more. I also admit that it was nice to be able to keep it in my mouth with out the smoke burning the #$^% out of my eyes! Plus it was a little more comfortable to hold too. Draw was a little tighter than what I'm used to. Is that common to the smaller guages?

Glad you enjoyed it. As far as the draw, it is pretty much like anything else when you are dealing with cigars....anything could happen. I have not had draw issues with smaller RG smokes any more than I have with any others. It just happens sometimes. You have to remember that cigars are a hand made product so sometimes they will not be perfect. :2

My preferences swing greatly -
I started smoking with mostly robustos - 5X50 all the time.
Then after 3 months or so, I started moving up in RG: 50 > 52 > 54 > 60.
Each size up I loved more.

Then after three months of hanging on at 54-60Rg, I got busy and bored of my smokes, so I decided to move on down towards smaller Rgs. I have been loving some lanceros and pc's for a few months, but I also find I am appreciating those robustos again....

Whoever says cigar taste and preferences is a cycle is dead on! :tu

If we all liked the exact same thing, all the time, there would only need to be one kind of cigar, right? Thank God there's so much more to it than that.

Lancero's are becoming more and more popular again. I normally smoke larger ring gauges (50 and up), but have been picking up lanceros in just about every brand I smoke. The smaller RG really brings alot of that wrapper flavor out.
You should give a few a try! :ss

I normally prefer at least a 50 ring guage, but I have ventured out and tried a few Lanceros recommended by NCRadioMan. Of all the Lanceros I have tried thus far, the Tatuaje was my favorite!!!

The Robusto is by far my favorite size, both in RG and length. I have tried 6x60 and that is too much and have smoked "small sticks" and those done work either. I could say PC to Toro is my range. I have yet to find a stick I liked in Toro that I did not like in PC though, etc. So for me it is more the size and time of the smoke. I enjoy smoking but a 6x60 takes 2+ hours which I rarely have.

Also, often to maintain the same flavor profile more tobacco has to be packed into smaller ring gauges resulting in stronger smokes. I feel there is a law of dimishing returns at work with this rule, so petit coronas and lonsdales don't really apply. There are plenty of exceptions too.

As for preferences, certain cigars I like better at larger ring gauge (52+) and some I prefer smaller. For example, I think almost all DPG cigars are at their best as a robusto (5x50), Camachos need to be larger, and I much prefer the larger ring CAOs (54+) to their smaller counterparts .

My default size for any unknown cigar would probably be a toro, and if I liked it then would explore larger or smaller based on my initial impressions.

i,too, have always preferred the larger rg's. after some experimenting within brands, i have found that i like certain sizes better than others. for instance, the smallest la requeza is by far my favorite of the line. i am looking forward to a fiver of the new lancero that pete has blended.
with that being said, the tat browns are just plain great in all sizes from the cojonu to the noella. the especiale and the A are excellent as well as the cazadore. and did i mention the black label.........................

Wow! I disappear for a couple of days and this thread gets to three pages?!

Anyhoo, still a little gun shy about buying smaller ring guage, but I went by the local B&M and picked up some Oliva V Lanceros today. Gonna let 'em rest awhile and the light 'em up this weekend.

Thanks for all of the input guys! Maybe I can learn some new tricks!
