What the Cigar Industry Needs

......... besides lower prices and increasing quality in existing products :D

No, Seriously guys and gals I've been thinking about ideas that would be beneficial to all BOTL's and SOTL's in their cigar smoking experiences. You know what do cigar smokers need that has yet to be invented. Good ideas that would make life easier for us or just enhance our smoking experience.

I've been trying to think of a program that could be downloaded on a PDA that would act as not only your cigar inventory and rolodex but also include tasting notes, prices, as well as act as your base for your wireless temp/hygrometer units. Sort of a catch-all type program that lets me peruse my inventory and do many other things all at once.

So what other ideas do you monkeys have that would make life easier for us. I just want to hear what you think the cigar smoking world needs ie- new inventions/technology, different boxing methods, etc pretty much anything.

I strongly agree with your first statement. I would rather see Habanos S.A. bring back the H.Upmann Super Corona, and Punch Super Selection No. 2, than ever produce another E.L.

I was having this exact same conversation the other day with OpusEx..... it seems the recent trend with Habanos has been to release cigars that are more "ready to smoke" than previous incarnations of the line. However how this will affect the aging process is yet to be seen. Many think that the new "curing" process might adversely affect how cigar smokers age their sticks. They might not be as aging friendly as they once were.

I agree Prince, I think they need to perfect some of their current classics before introducing new vitolas all the time. But that's just me and I'm a complete and total newb

Their are a couple of good database solutions available for Palm and Pocket PC such as HandBase and Smartlist To Go, I have both and they are easy to use and you can build/modify a DB in minutes. I have built a couple of DB's which have most of the info you have suggested. Don't know about the wireless Temp/Humidity thing though as I'm not sure how you want to incorporate it or what sort thing you are trying to do.

If you haven't seen them B4 you may want to have a look.
PM me if you would like to know more.

I'm sure you can already get wireless hygrothermometers, but I don't know if they'd come with palm software... maybe if you buy one, find a willing and experienced coder, then briber him/her with some decent sticks, you may get an exttemely Heath Robinson solution that works just fine!

I've got an Oregon Scientific Wireless Hygro that has a range of 100ft however I guess I just want to be spoiled and know what my RH is doing at all times :D

I think it would be beneficial to some of us more picky BOTL who always want all the info at our fingertips. Basically I want it to do everything including make me breakfast on weekends ;)

Did this unit come with software? I presume just for PC or did it come with Palm compatible SW?

Have you seen the DB's that I mentioned?

I have tried my outdoor GE wireless hygro-termometer in my humi but it was a complete failure. The readings weren't close to the digital units in place. Are you happy with the Oregon Scientific? Is there a particular brand or model made for humidors, or that works particularily well for this purpose?

As for the PDA, take DownUnder LLG's advice and load a decent database onto your PDA. It's been a while since I looked, but I'll bet there are open-source (open-source=free but possibly higher risk) databases. I am a Java developer but haven't had any experience with Microdevices like PDAs.

Actually it doesn't come with any SW package at all. I don't think I've ever seen a wireless Hygro that is compatible with any sort of software program. That's why I thought it would be a good idea. The unit is a stand alone system where the wireless transmitter sends info to the base unit which runs on batteries.

I just thought it'd be a great idea to compile this type of technology with Handbase or another program to make a sort of all in one program that handles all of your cigar needs. I don't think anything like that exists as far as the wireless hygro is concerned. But if you have an idea on how to integrate the two, that would be awesome!!!

Moglman..... this is the unit I use http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...61254-0878545?v=glance&s=home-garden&n=507846 and I've had ZERO problems with it. I love it and know many other gorillas who use the same or similar base units.

I have one of the programs on my PDA but the idea was to integrate the software with a watchdog for the Wireless Hygro so when I'm out of town or wherever I can see how my RH and temp is doing at home. Does that make sense? Maybe I'm not saying it clearly...... I just think it'd be cool :)

Have you made a DB with the program you have/had on your Palm?
Their is some test equipment spec stuff available on the market made by Fluke etc, some of this stuff can communicate with Palm's etc, however you are starting to talk about $$$ because this stuff is very spec'd.

Makes perfect sense. If I get a bit of time, I'll try to start thinking about design
possibilities. Thanks for the link. I'll pick one up for sure. I want to monitor my 3 humi's and this allows for three remote sensors. Thanks!

What about the unit sold by Radio Shack? I'm not very high tech, and appreciate all these great ideas...Thanks

I"ll agree with Dustin. I have the same one and it's great. I'm looking at getting the other sensors so I can run my coolerdors all on the same unit.

You know those little tips that ritsy old women put on the ends of their cigarretes... like Cruella Deville?..
We need those for cigars.....definetly...

They have those, but as the saying goes, smoking a premium cigar with a tip is like drinking fine wine through a straw.

There are quite a few LLG's who use the Radio Shack Hygro and are quite pleased with it. I just like this one because it can monitor 3 locations wirelessly at once as well as keep a log of the High and Low RH and Temp, plus it doubles as my alarm clock :D

If you're just looking for a basic Hygro then I think you'll be fine with the Radio Shack version.

I have three of these units and they all salt test at 75%. Great units. Cheaper here.

So when I read the title I see "what the cigar industry needs" and right underneath it I see XXX. I'm thinking... it needs porn?? Well, I guess so, but do we really need to remind guys that they're smoking long, hard sticks? :D

EDIT: Thinking after posting (yeah...there's a backwards trait), I apologize if this offends anyone, I just thought it was funny.
