So, I've yet to enjoy a "real" cigar. I enjoy Swisher Sweets, Jewels, and White Owls, but I really am interested in something that can't be bought from a convenience store. What would you say is a good first cigar?

Good evening, take a chance to introduce yourself in the New Gorilla Forum and you will find a wide variety of answers for your question - it all depends on what your likes and dislikes are.

I believe most will agree that a Rocky Patel '92 is a good start and try as many different sticks as you can. You will be amazed at the variety available.

Good luck and welcome to the Forum, its a great place!

Go to your local store and ask them what they carry thats mild but flavorful. Start there with something you can manage and preferably robusto sized.

AVH, here's a sticky (<--link) with a nice list of cigars to try. The best bet when starting is to try many different cigars to find what you like. Try to buy cigars from reputable vendors (tobacco shops) as many convenient stores don't properly humidify their cigars.

I have to suggest starting with a Padron X000 series. Padron's were the first real cigar I smoked and I still love them to this day.

I just got into this and really have enjoyed both of these: Don Tomas Sun Grown or Arturo Fuente Rothschild Maduro.

Greetings AVH - Inner Harbor....yep that is where I had my first "real" cigar. Bought it in the small B&M that's located in the same building as the Cheese cake factory. I jumped in with an Ashton and is still one of my favorites. :tu

So my quest begins....great link to your post.....I myself am going to attempt to smoke one of each of these to expand the pallet....

If you like mild cigars, then the 5 Vegas Gold or maybe a Montesino/ Macanudo. Some of the Romeo y Julieta 1875's are a good start, or Ashton. Myself, I started on a La Flor Dominicana. It was a very strong cigar, but got me used to trying fuller bodied cigars right off the bat. If you want to try and start off on a medium to full bodied (medium/full bodied is the strength of a cigar) smoke then you can try Carlos Torano or a CAO, among many others. Don Pepin Garcia's smokes are medium to full bodied and are normally, very reasonably priced for a great smoke. Try a variety of smokes. Your gonna get the opportunity to smoke some just horrible cigars and some tobacco masterpieces, but thats the beauty of it. Even the worst premium cigar you smoke, will still be MUCH MUCH better then those swisher sweets/backwoods you have been smoking.

The Tatauje Series P is an excellant stick, well priced, and will not kill you with nicotine or too much spice. Even my non cigar friends will smoke on on occasion.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I'll try a 5 Vegas Gold or Tatauje Series P to start with, and work from there.

Padron 1964 was one of my first real cigars...i've only smoked a handful different ones since then, and its still my favorite. Im new to cigar smoking too. I had a Ghurka G5 avenger tonight that was pretty good that i would recommend also. Just try everything

Good luck
