Which brand is most...

polarizing..(to divide into sharply opposing factions).
It seems to me that there are few brands that divide smokers into a yes I like them, or no I don't like them. Most of us just try a new brand and like it and want to try more or say that was nothing special and move on.
BUT there seems to be one brand that smokers really like or really dislike. Not much middle ground.

I'm talking about Gurkha's. What do guys think?
Is there any other brand that is so sharply liked or disliked?

I haven't tried a Gurkha yet but have a few and will try one soon but I noticed some strong opinions about this brand.

I think CAO falls in that category. There are some people who will not even look at another CAO after having one. Me, I find getting a good one worth trying another band.

I have a Gurhka in the humi as well. I haven't tried anything from them either. So far RP is who I have smoked the most from. I have not found one of his that I did not like.

Gurkha and CAO are very good examples. On both lines, I either hate em or love em. I love the milder Gurkha's (Hansotia Symphony), but really dislike the Vintage and Legends. I'm yet to try the Grand Age, but possibly tomorrow.

CAO, I love the fuller bodied such as the Brazilia and Maduro's, but don't really care for the Golds. :D

I have had some Gurkas that were very good and some that were nasty. The same thing is true with Fuente and others.I will usualy try a different stick from the same company if I find one I don't like.I'v even found some that the first time I didn't like them, tried again and did(Ashton VSG's)so I guess this responce isn't much help..:r..:chk

I agree that Gurkha and CAO are great examples.

But I would have to place my vote on flavored cigars. :tg
Some folks absolutely love them, while others (like me) think they are horrible. :BS

Heh! I think any of the aromatics will draw a divided response. Drew Estate, Acid, Lars Tetens and along those lines. Someone sent me some Kahlua cigars once. Should be a name for them other than "cigars." Somebody mentioned Rocky Patel. RP seems to be a bit polarizing, too, though I'm not sure why.

Puros Indios and Te-Amo are both love/hate brands in my experience. I get cravings for both brands at times. Neither is a cigar I could enjoy smoking frequently though. These cigars are sort of like White Castle burgers to me in that way..

I think save for the 2 folks who work for Acid that show up here once in awhile aromatic and flavored cigars are generally despised by all here. (Except VirtualSmitty loves Lars..) As to designer manufacturers like CAO, Rocky Patel, Gurkha; I think there is a dislike for these brands because of their designer nature, not because their blends are polarizing. What you really have is Torano, Plasencia, Oliva, and Perdomo cigars from these brands; because even though they show pictures of them stacking leaves in curing barns designer brands don't own fields or factories, just marketing concepts..

I definitely agree with the marketing aspect of these two (CAO and Gurkha). Gurkha just seems so gimmicky sometimes and CAO does too but IMO CAO's are really good smokes so its not so bad. CAO has so much variety though- the Brazilia, Black, Cameroon, these are just 3 that I have tried that all are very different so I can't see how someone could not find at least 1 or 2 CAO's that they like.

OTOH I will probably recieve death threats for this :gn but I would think something like Fuente would be something you either hate or love just because IMO they are all so similar. I personally don't like the fuente's I have tried and they all kinda remind me of each other so I could say I don't like Fuente. :2

well i don't like gurkha or puros indios

but i hate cao, so you can count me for that side of the argument.:ss

It's funny that when I look for words of wisdom on this kind of thing, I should just shut up and say "yeah, what Matt said" More often than not he analyzes the question like I would. That being said, in a BTT I would bet that if you like Toranos..... you would like Gurkhas.. There are a bunch (just a guess, no scientific polling required, you freaks) of gorillas here that pledge disdain for Gurkhas, yet are a fan of Torano. Marketing working its wonders or working to stratify its demographics by appealing to the Robb Report set too strongly.

I first read this post last night and today I was in a B&M at lunch with one of my friends trying to decide on which stick we should buy to smoke after our meal. First we pass the Gurkhas and he says "I've never tried one but I have heard mixed reviews" second we come across the CAOs and he declares "I have tried those and I don't like them." I personally have tried many of each and also have mixed feelings. the CAOs seem to at least stay consistent but I feel like Gurkha is a crap shoot from blend to blend.... Oh we settled on AF Sun Growns that were oh so yummy.

I should have clarified, he grouped together all CAOs in his mind, while I like the Criollo, Italia, and the Brazilia consistently, but the others I've tried either I just didn't like, or the construction was off.
