Who knows about JR cigar

Young Chimp
I went to their website to hunt around a bit. They say they sell about every cigar made, but I can't find 3 of my 5 most smoked cigars there.

Padron 2000
Oliva G
5 Vegas

Also, has anyone tried their alternative cigars? Are they worth it? :cb

JRs does not carry Oliva, Padron, Rocky Patel and a few others for some dispute or another

Until recently Cigars International and their affiliates (Cigar.com and Cigar Bid) were the only folks who carried 5 Vegas but I have seen them other places recently.

Back from the 1970s through late-90s, I ordered regular from J-R.
Service got cruddy as they got bigger. House brands, including J-R Alternatives, dropped in quality. Their cigars did not match the catalog copy.
The only reliable smoke was El Rey del Mundo.
The only J-R item I enjoyed was reading Lew's hilarious writing in the catalog. And that seems to be pretty much vanished. Too big, too corporate, too haughty, no fun.
I stopped buying from them 10 years ago, switched to Famous.
Now I have signed over my house and cars to Famous auctioneer and cigarbid.

i would guess that most, or at least many, members here have ordered from them.
try a search and you'll probably find every opinion imaginable about the alternatives

alternatives aren't all that bad but the quality is inconsistent. But for a bundle for around $25 it's not a bad deal. Just don't go overboard with it or you will regret it later. If I were you spend the extra couple bucks a stick and get something else:tu

If you are looking for something cheap at JR. Don't bother with the alt's. Always go with the Consuegra's. Specifically the #9 maduro.

:tpd: With a bit of time, the alt's are not bad. They are fowl right out of the bundle, to me anyways.

I buy from J&Rs if they have a sale on something I like or want to try. Used to buy more from them until CI came along. but mostly I get my smokes from Cbid or Cigars Int'l which is my local B&M. I have had some of J&Rs alternatives and wasn't disappointed, but they also weren't worth remembering.

I do not care for any of there Alts. The first bundle of Consuegra's I bought was ok, then the second one I bought sucked. So I am done with those.
There pipe tobacco tin prices are the cheapest I have seen anywhere.

I have had three order from CI and they have been on time. Will order a bundle of Flor de Oliva for 34.99 plus $5 shipping. Pretty good price

JR cigars is an awesome place.. they have a store about an hour from me... amazing place.. i know they ship out of NC usps priority.. usually the day you order. never had problems with them at all... definatly one of my go to site to order from.

and yes as previously stated they dont carry those few things your looking for

I have tried their alternative cigars before and I do not recommend them at all. For a little bit more :2, you can buy the real brand (if they are not Habanos). J&R also tend to over humidify their stock as well. Happy smoking.

I ordered 3 5 packs last week. First and last order I'm afraid.

Not impressed with price, A tad lower thats why I did it (sale), but not enough to justify the experience. I got name brand stuff, and the stuff was almost dripping wet. I put 1 5 pack in a Tupperware container with a hygro and let it sit overnight and the next day it was reading 80%. I check CI and C-bid from time to time and it comes in around 69 - 72.

The plastic wrap around the one 5 pack was so tight the pack was curling and the outside 2 cigars were a different shape.

Cigars International owns the 5 Vegas brand so your best bet is to lowball them on Cigarbid. I'm not sure what the beef is with JR and Padron, but what I heard is that the Padron brothers had a falling out at some point, and since JR sells lots and lots of Estelo Padron's cigars (El Rey del Mundo is the big one) he doesn't do bidness with the Jose Padron family. That, and I doubt Padron would allow JR to discount them too much anyway.

The only Alt I've tried was the Fuente Hemingway. Dog City. Total garbage. I can't speak for any of the others, but I won't be trying the Alts again.

And I'm smoking an Oliva G Maduro right now. A fine smoke!

I'd rather order from CI or Cbid online. But if you're ever in NC, go to one of their outlets, particularly the one in Statesville. I go to Statesville at least twice a year.

JR alts are good if you get the right ones. The RP Vintage alts are good, so are the Boli CC alts and the Cohiba Siglo IV alts. But they do need a good bit of rest in the humi. Don't smoke one right out of the bundle.

Since I pass JR's in 1-40 going to UNC and coming back I often stop in. Last week I bought a 5er of Montecristo Whites, they were indeed a little too humid, but smoked fine after a week in the humidor. You can find neat deals and it is a nice place to smoke with a couple of friends since the coffee is free. I don't order online since it is easier for me to plan my purchases and avoid the $2.50 a piece shipping (I am hearing that they are adding a gas surcharge too but I cna't confirm that). It is definitely worth a stop if you pass by.
