Why do you smoke?

I enjoy smoking cigars because I like the feeling I get from taking the time after a hard day at work, etc. to select the perfect smoke and take in the peace it gives me.

To sum it up, I'm sitting outside right now on a perfect evening, my two German Shepherds are lying at my feet, I can hear the crickets chirping, and I'm soaking in a nice cigar. When it's finished, I'll put the dogs away for the night and go inside and sleep well because I have completely scraped off the day's BS. How much better can I explain it?

+2. Perfect description.

For the relaxation and contemplation of life. Also, for the nuances and flavors of different marcas.

I like the taste, plus the relaxation. I can sit down outside with no phones ringing, no papers in front of me and no one coming to me for answers or decisions about anything. It's a great way to unwind at the end of the day, or after completing a project at home.

Because I want to look cool of course!
All cool kids smoke, dontcha know? :ss

But seriously, it's because I have three kids (all boys!) an understanding wife and a fairly stressful work. Even my doctor doesn't seem to mind the cigar/day habit if it reduces my stress. Of course, not sure how he would feel about 3 to 4/day habit....

I love the whole ball of wax...the way a cigar looks, feels, and smells before it's lit. I love lighting up & getting that first taste. Sitting and relaxing, reading a book & letting the world go by.

Did I mention it pisses my neighbor off when the smoke goes over the fence?

Great feedback here! :tu I forgot to mention that my search for the ultimate cigar also drives my obsession! :ss

I think this is an interesting topic. Personally I'm wound pretty tight and smoking a cigar offers me the oportunity to take an hour out of my day and kick back and relax. For me it's an enjoyable process that I look forward. A nice stick and a good aged rum is one of lifes pleasures.

I agree with most posters on this thread... relaxation, enjoy the taste/aroma but for a couple other reasons also...

I like the culture of it all: selecting a stick, the ritual of smoking a cigar, caring for them, learning about them.

I also like the "it's a guy thing" element of smoking cigars... yes, yes I know there are ladies out there who enjoy them just as much as guys do, but I think it would be safe to say the it is primarily a guy thing.

Because I love it. Rest, relaxation when I'm alone. Comradarie when I'm with fellow smokers. Exploring different cigars from different countries, with different blends. It's an awesome experience.

Because I bought all these cigars,
& I can't think of anything better to do with them.
Besides bombing, that is.:ss

All great points posted so far.

Personally I find smoking cigars extremely relaxing. That is the only time I smoke is when I'm relaxing. Sitting on my dock or deck with the computer or a book/newspaper. I can't see mowing the lawn or washing the car in Florida's 90+ degree heat smoking a cigar.

Secondly I do subscribe to "its a manly thing" also. When you are married to a woman who reads books such as "The Natural Superiority of Women" and "Why Women Should Rule the World" you need something to keep in touch with your manliness. I know it may sound superficial but it helps. (The marriage is coming to an end soon, so that'll help too.)

Thirdly, I'm fascinated and intrigued by the flavor and aroma differences and nuances of different cigars. I find it amazing that one can sample an endless variety of one style of cigar (maduros for example, my favorite) and they all have different tastes and aromas even though they are the same style. I've been a craft beer afficianado for many years and it's the same. You can sample a wide variety of Stouts, IPA's, Barleywines, etc. and athough they are the same style beer, they all have slight differences in flavor and aroma.

It's the simple things in life that make it so great to be alive and healthy!!

An excellent point. Even though by now I have a pretty good idea what I like, I still enjoy sampling new things. I ran across a rosado that my neighborhood B&M carries (it's an unbanded store brand made in the Dominican) that I enjoy about as much as anything.
